Both Parties See a Big Increase in New Voters By FORD FESSENDEN

Published: September 26, 2004

A sweeping voter registration campaign in heavily Democratic areas has added tens of thousands of new voters to the rolls in the swing states of Ohio and Florida, a surge that has far exceeded the efforts of Republicans in both states, a review of registration data shows.

The analysis by The New York Times of county-by-county data shows that in Democratic areas of Ohio - primarily low-income and minority neighborhoods - new registrations since January have risen 250 percent over the same period in 2000. In comparison, new registrations have increased just 25 percent in Republican areas. A similar pattern is apparent in Florida: in the strongest Democratic areas, the pace of new registration is 60 percent higher than in 2000, while it has risen just 12 percent in the heaviest Republican areas.

While comparable data could not be obtained for other swing states, similar registration drives have been mounted in them as well, and party officials on both sides say record numbers of new voters are being registered nationwide. This largely hidden but deadly earnest battle is widely believed by campaign professionals and political scientists to be potentially decisive in the presidential election.

"We know it's going on, and it's a very encouraging sign," said Steve Elmendorf, deputy campaign manager for Senator John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee. The new voters, Mr. Elmendorf said, "could very much be the difference."

The Dems have to get those people to the polls and Jesse and Kwame have been complaining they don't have the money to do that--it's all been siphoned off to the 527s.

I read on another thread that about 80 percent of MORON.ORG's money was going to voter registration efforts rather than advertising. Looks like it is paying off.

Make sure WE do something about it. Do you want to hear the phrase Chief Justice Hillary Rodham Clinton?

Bush will win Fla and OH, but we must have the courage to fight the fraud.

What if the DemoRats are registering more new voters in 2004 because the Republicans ALREADY registered many many many many new voters in 2001, 2002 and 2003?

Well, it would mean the Dems are playing a game of catch-up, which is too little and too late.

consider where the article is coming from... The NY Slimes a true paper that is not afraid to print it's liberal bias.

The polls are just a cross section of America, and those that are likely to vote.

I would say that in general that most polls are correct in indicating that Bush holds a lead in most areas. I would not trust the #'s 100 percent though.

I think what you need to look at is what does each canidate offer as the canidate of their party. Prime example the two conventions.

Kerry and DNC convention = John Kerry reporting for duty and why he is the best for a new america. A lot of hot air bloviating not much of plans or substance now or since.

Bush and the RNC convention = laid out ideas and plans for the next 4 years

What evidence do you have that the Republicans "already registered many many many many new voters in 2001, 2002, and 2003?"

Has anyone looked at the move-in/move-out rate in those areas? Has anyone looked at the rate of children turning 18 since 2000 in those areas?

What else might explain such a high rate of registrations in areas of low population turnover? < /rhetorical question>

It's called fraud, it was already reported, and the Secretary of State and Attorney General have been notified or are already involved.

Beware SW Ohio - Moveon.org just moved in to your neighbordhood.

Ohio attorney general joins Summit inquiry

Fraud alleged on 803 voter registration cards at elections board

By Jim Carney

Beacon Journal staff writer

The Ohio Attorney General's Office confirmed Wednesday that it has joined the investigation into alleged voter-registration fraud in Summit County.

At issue, according to county Board of Elections Director Bryan Williams, are 803 voter registration cards received by the board over the past two months.

``The common thread is they are for addresses that don't exist,'' Williams said.

The Board of Elections last month asked the Summit County Sheriff's Office to investigate 50 such cards that came from the AFL-CIO central office in Cleveland.

The state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation got involved at the sheriff's office's request, said Bob Beasley, a spokesman for Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro.

Sheriff's Capt. Larry Momchilov said he could not comment on the case.

Williams said the elections board has computer records on all addresses in the county and when an attempt to register someone for a nonexistent address is made, ``the computer kicks it out.''

While no new bad-address cards came from the AFL-CIO after those first 50 last month, Williams said all of the cards in question had ``Cuyahoga County Board of Elections'' printed at the bottom of the form.

The rest of the bad-address cards were either forwarded from the Cuyahoga elections board or sent directly to the Summit County elections office in unmarked envelopes, Williams said.

And ``in many of them, the handwriting looks similar,'' he said, noting the cards have ``a common source, common handwriting and common mistake of nonexisting street number.''

In a lot of cases, Williams said, the street names were misspelled in the same way.

``It implies that the same person is making the same mistake,'' he said.

``This is my first presidential election (on the job), but those who have been here before say this is unprecedented,'' Williams said.

Because Ohio doesn't include choosing a party at voter registration, it's not possible to know what campaign the registrations could have helped, had they been accepted.

Williams said he doesn't think the AFL-CIO group in Cleveland had any knowledge of problems with the registration cards it sent.

``I believe they just forwarded the cards that were brought to them,'' Williams said.

John Ryan, executive secretary of the Cleveland AFL-CIO, said it's horrible ``that someone is scheming with our volunteer effort and others to play with the system.''

He said he hopes officials find who is responsible.

``It is not only a felony but it is playing with the democracy in a dangerous, horrible way,'' he said.

Ryan said the AFL-CIO is registering thousands and thousands of union members this year, and while doing that may yield ``a handful'' of questionable registration cards, ``it is the duty of the election board to determine that.''

``It is not our duty to judge the cards,'' he said. ``We've always been told as soon as we register people we should send them over to the board.''

I'll say it now, reports of the highest voter/election fraud in history.

Libs have no morals.

Main Entry: fas·cism

Pronunciation: 'fa-"shi-z&m also 'fa-"si-

Function: noun

Etymology: Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle & fasces fasces

1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

I've been concerned about this myself, especially after the surprise turnout Gore got in 2000. Everyone seemed to think Gore would win the Electoral College and Bush the Popular Vote; instead the opposite happened.

So I am worried, but I see positives and negatives:

Positive: Bush is polling ahead even in Zogby, something he didn't do last time. Also, the Likely Voters lead seems to be big enough to compensate for the ever-erratic new/unpolled voters.

Positive: Bush is much closer with the youth vote than he was against Gore. Hence the new MTV/DNC "Bush wants to bring back the draft" campaign. They obviously see this with their internal polls, too.

Negative: Democrat turnout will be its highest ever, count on it. There will be a ton of new votes coming out for Kerry (or rather, against Bush).

Negative: Democrat vote fraud will be at a record high (wanna bet on that?).

Positive: No more October surprises are likely to be as effective as the drunk driving charge in 2000. They have hit Bush with everything including the kitchen sink, and then the pipes underneath. He's still standing.

Positive: Christians are more motivated than ever. I expect Ohio to be out of contention soon because of church efforts coming out on the Republican side (for a change).

Negative: Still three debates and more than a month to go; anything can happen.

Positive: Terror strikes and attempts overseas trying to change elections in places like Australia, etc., will remind people that this isn't September 10th, 2000 anymore. There is nothing positive about terrorism, don't misunderstand me; but the reality is that the Dems have been trying to make people forget about it, and with elections everywhere coming soon, that is becoming less and less effective.

----So to me, I am cautiously optimistic. I don't think anyone should expect a blowout, despite recent polls. I do think that redoubling our efforts is essential to helping Bush to victory.

My prediction: a squeaker, with Bush pulling it off because of picking-up Wisconsin and holding on to Missouri, Arkansas, Nevada, and Colorado. I see Bush getting 291 EVs right now.

Stay optimistic, but be wary that there is plenty of time left for Liberal treachery!!

Not really worried about this, but I'm curious if the Bush campaign or the RNC has reacted to this story and, if so, what did they say.
