The crater of Mount St. Helens showing the formation of a new glacier is seen from a helicopter on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 in Mount St. Helens, Wash. Small earthquakes at the rate of one or two a minute on Monday, Sept. 27, 2004 had seismologists keeping a close watch on Mount St. Helens. Scientists were not sure what was going on beneath the southwest Washington volcano and planned a full day of investigations. The earthquake swarms began Thursday and on Sunday the Geological Survey issued a notice ofvolcanic unrest, saying there was "an increased likelihood of a hazardous event." (AP Photo/Bob Grieser)

Also From: USFS Volcano Review, Summer 2002, contribution by Charlie Anderson, Director of the International Glaciospeleological Survey
In the unique laboratory of Mount St. Helens, scientists that study glaciers and glacier caves are observing and documenting a newly formed glacier. Over the last 21 years, snow, ice and rock debris have accumulated behind the Lava Dome to an average depth of 100 meters (325 feet) thick. The snow has been stacking higher each year compressing the past years' snow into a dense crystalline ice body, as deep as 190 meters (600 feet). Giant cracks in the ice, called crevasses, and other flow features, indicate that the ice body is transforming into a glacier. Scientists, known as Glaciospeleologists, have been studying the movement and growth of the glacier as it creeps around both sides of the Lava Dome, flowing north.

There's lots of lava moving round down there. It is what it is.
Didn't some old guy with a historic name buy it when the whole thing exploded?

With all that has been going on, I would be real nervous about flying over that crater. I can still remember the pictures of the last eruption and a helicopter over the crater is no place to be.

Didn't some old guy with a historic name buy it when the whole thing exploded?Name was Harry Truman. He was hounded by the press continually asking him when he was leaving his home. The first time they asked he said "Never" so of course they made him into a big story and continued asking him when he was leaving. To save face he did not leave and died as a result. His death is on the press's hands I believe.

No way is there a glacier up there. Glaciers are melting everywhere. OwlGore told me so.

Seriously, that's really a neat picture. I hiked up near there in August 1990, and there was no snow anywhere in view.

Oh come on. He was warned over and over to leave. I can't blame his death on the press. A heroine in French literature preferred to drown rather than remove her skirts so she could swim. Aren't they both cases of stupidity?

Global warming has already been redefined as any change in the weather. Cooling is warming, and warming is warming. Make out your checks to the bureaucracy at the UN.

I hiked up near there in August 1990, and there was no snow anywhere in view The glaciers were blown off and/or melted in the explosion in 1980. They've slowly been reforming since then. Most, if not all, of the snow has melted by August. A few of my kids hiked St. Helen's in Aug. 2003 and it was pretty dry. I'm amazed that glaciers can form at all considering how hot it gets there in southern WA state. Once again we get to seen nature doin it's thing. It's pretty awesome.

Everyone knows Global warming causes Global Cooling. When we have to get worried is when it gets really cool, cause that will mean it is really hot.
