Something like this happened to some helicopter pilots many years ago. Somebody shot a laser at a military chopper from thier backyard. I believe a college professer.

Fox: Commercial Pilots 'attacked' with laser
Fox News | Greta Van Susteren

Posted on 09/28/2004 8:12:49 PM PDT by ableChair

"Greta Van Susteren reported that a Delta pilot enroute to Salt Lake City was lazed in the cockpit this last Wednesday. Only country I know that has that hardware (for lazing bomber pilots) was the Soviet Union. Pilot reportedly required medical treatment and this was not a minor injury (weak laser) wound. More will come out to tomorrow as this story hits the print press."

It's been years since there was a bash Mormans thread on FR. I don't recall anyone saying they were developing laser weapons to use against airlines, but just about everything else.

The aircraft safely landed, and that is about all.

Why would you want to do that, the dumpster might cushion the fall?? But then you could drop him on a closed dumpster.

A Navy helo pilot suffered eye damage several years ago while inspecting a Russian freighter off Seattle. Seems like somebody on the bridge decided to lase him. The DOD was up in arms, but the Boys From Can't Find Their Own Foggy Bottom (i.e. the State Department) quashed the U.S. response.

OBTW, did I mention this occurred during the Clinton occupation?

They should start issuing laser protection goggles. There are only a few types of commonly used lasers with rather sharply defined wavelengths. There are special materials with strong narrow band adsorption, specifically used for eye protection against laser radiation. Edmund Scientific, I believe, has these (about $300 apiece).

Maybe it was the glare of the sun shining off of John Kerry's orange face?

quashed the U.S. response.

and tried to quash the pilot, his honor, and what was left of his career too, didn't they?

This is an actual plot device used by Tom Clancy in one of his novels.

Current laser technology renders all pilots in the cockpit of an aircraft totally blind on final approach.

What's scary about this isn't the thought of doing it to planes. Military cockpits and visors/goggles have coatings to protect against this, and it's an easy precaution to extend that to airliners.

No, the scary thought is this: Imagine someone using this laser weapon against a busy rush-hour freeway. Lasers aren't big bolts of light like you see in Star Wars; the attacker could blind a dozen drivers, cause a major pileup and be on his way before anyone had a chance of spotting him.

You can buy the parts, surplus, off the 'net for an RF pumped 40 watt LASER right now for under 200 USD.

I believe 40 Watts is enough to cause a lot of trouble.

Maybe the next assault weapons ban will include......

Never mind.
