Scheduled downtime for systems upgrades this weekend - fundraiser will start next week

Edited on 9/30/2004, 6:46:41 PM by Jim Robinson. [history]

It's time to upgrade our system again. A couple months ago we added our fifth server to the system, but we're still in need of more horsepower. We're now receiving over 5.5 million hits per day from upwards of 200,000 unique visitors... and growing. We now have over 250 new registrants signing up per day and sometimes as many as 300 to 400 on a single day. Welcome newbies!

To handle the expected growth through the election cycle and beyond, we have acquired three additional new servers and John is going to install them over the coming weekend. He's also taking this opportunity to install the latest upgrades to our operating systems. We are hoping that any service outages during the installation and upgrade will be minimal, but there may be brief downtime periods. With our last upgrade, we now have a built-in level of component redundancy and hope that we can bring down parts of the system for upgrading without having to bring down the entire system. The three additional servers will add both processing power and storage capacity, plus increased systems redundancy.

We've also decided to delay the start of our 4th quarter fundraiser until after the upgrade is complete. The fundraiser will probably start on Monday.

Thank you all very much.

Looking forward to a great debate tonight and an exciting election cycle. Especially looking forward to a landslide for President Bush and an increase in the Republican majority so we have a clear mandate for busting the liberal/Democrat filibuster and for completing the war on terror.

Go Bush!! Go Pubbies!!

Are there any stats on the percentage of trolls in the new registrations, or are trolls left out of the calculations?

I say this because even a growing number of trolls is a negative indicator of how fast FR is growing.

For those new members who haven't been around for a downtime, there is a Yahoo group available to use while FR is down: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freerepublic2/

Focus Forum is going to have to run on an IBM Z-Series Linux array one of these days.

Probably cheaper to lease one, Jim.

He must be installing that great new XP service pack 2. It solves all the problems there ever have been on any computer ever made. Really, Bill Gates told me so:)

Think "Beowulf Cluster." We can chat on FR while an enterprising group of FReepers runs nuclear weapon design hydrocodes on the spare capacity.
