Kerry, On American Nuclear Weapons: "I'm Going to Shut That Program Down"
Debate Transcript | 10/01/04 | Becki Snow

Posted on 09/30/2004 11:22:49 PM PDT by dandelion

What is the biggest threat to the United States? According to John Kerry, it's not terrorism, but nuclear proliferation - and not just foreign weapons programs. He means OUR nuclear weapons programs...

DEBATE TRANSCRIPT

LEHRER: If you are elected president, what will you take to that office thinking is the single most serious threat to the national security to the United States?

KERRY: ...Right now the president is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to research bunker-busting nuclear weapons. The United States is pursuing a new set of nuclear weapons. It doesn't make sense.

You talk about mixed messages. We're telling other people, "You can't have nuclear weapons," but we're pursuing a new nuclear weapon that we might even contemplate using.

Not this president. I'm going to shut that program down, and we're going to make it clear to the world we're serious about containing nuclear proliferation.

NOTHING speaks more clearly about the mindset of this candidate that THIS answer to THIS question. Kerry believes OUR weapons program is the biggest threat to the U.S. today - and that's what Kerry's going to shut down. Nothing in this debate compares to THIS statement for illuminating the choice between Bush, who believes that our enemy is terrorism - and Kerry, who believes that our enemy is our own weapons program. Kerry believes that our enemy is not Osama Bin Laden, or Saddam Hussein, but our own scientists, who are trying to develop weapons to win the War on Terror.

I don't recall our own weapons crashing into the World Trade Center - do you? But I do recall our own weapons hitting the target at Tora Bora. Which leads to a question which must be asked of John Kerry -

Why does he think that the single most serious threat to American Security is not the men who are trying to kill us, but the men who are trying to save us?

I'm going to post this to my blog - I believe this information has been completely passed over by the media. It needs to get out that THIS was his answer to the question - "what is the most serious threat to the national security of the United States?"

Exactly. The President should've nailed his ass to the wall on this...but something tells me we're gonna have some ads out that will do just that.

I agree and we'll see that phrase "global" used again. Kerry wants to be the "global" President, not the US President.

Kerry's answer shouldn't surprise anyone. He has been voting against any and everything that is needed to defend this country. Zell Miller got it right in his speech when he asked what Kerry and the democrats would defend this country with. Spitballs?

Didn't he also say he is upset that Vladimir Putin is showing signs of reinvigorating communism... How's that for stategic double talk... I will shut down our nuclear weapons just as the Russians start sparking up Cold War part II...

Strategic Defense is our friend Senator Kerry...Don't throw the Baby out with the bath water...
Kerry came off as a typical politician full of promises and short on delivery. Empty suit.

The President was more human, more real, less scripted, resolved, confident and optimistic.

One man tells us what he thinks we want to hear and one man speaks from his heart

Kerry is giving our enemies a good place to hide. Just build a bunker and our enemies can develop all the nasty weapons they want because the U.S. is not going to be able to get them. Kerry doesn't want us to have nuclear bunker busting bombs.

Bush says we should go after the terrorists wherever they are. Even in a Bunker. I like that answer.

BTTT. Good find. Kerry really is still the pacifist wus in sheep's clothing.

When he invoked the name of Ronald Reagan, I was so hoping for Bush to bitchslap him down about how much Kerry never supported President Reagan and voted against almost every weapons program that Reagan used to win the Cold War.

I would have said: Mr. Kerry, I knew Ronald Reagan, and I Ronald Reagan was a friend of mine, and from what I know, you obstructed Ronald Reagan at every turn. If it were up to you, we wouldn't have had the tools to beat Russia in the Cold War. Why should we believe that you are equipped to win the War on Terror?

Kind of goes along with his record in the Senate, don't it? Well, he's at least consistent on one thing. He wants to disarm the United States.

Oh yea. And provide Iran with uranium. And from here on out, pass a global test to see if we should defend ourselves or not.

He will make us safer? To who? Our enemies?

KERRY:

And part of that leadership is sending the right message to places like North Korea.

Right now the president is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to research bunker-busting nuclear weapons. The United States is pursuing a new set of nuclear weapons. It doesn't make sense.

You talk about mixed messages. We're telling other people, "You can't have nuclear weapons," but we're pursuing a new nuclear weapon that we might even contemplate using.

TO SUM IT UP - Kerry asks "Why is it okay for US to have nuclear weapons but its not okay for North Korea (or the terrorists for that matter) to have them?"

Its one thing for some Liberal to say this. Its another thing for that Liberal to be the Presidnet of the United States.

The most frustrating part of the debate to me was the fact that Bush didn't challenge F'ing Kerry about many of his lies abd also his OUTRAGEOUS statements such as ridding US of OUR NUKES!!! What the H is he trying to do? Without our Nukes we are even with many other countries and our defenses are a lot weaker.

The President also should have challenged F'ing Kerry about the statements that he was going to rid the former soviet Union of all their nukes in 4 years...SAY WHAT???

I must admit, I was not happy with the performance of the Prez. I was in my car driving back to Raleigh from Wilmington so I didn't get to see the facial expressions and body language that some pundits are talking about but I was SCREAMING at my radio to try to wake the Prez up. He almost seemed drugged on sedatives ....before each answer there was a hesitation that was driving me crazy. He really let a great opportunity to slam F'ing Kerry go unused.....

"This man is a danger to this country, and he must not be allowed to be in charge of anything.

He sure is. Why does he think we're researching bunker-busting nukes? It's because Iran is building nuclear weapons labs inside mountains where they can't be attacked with conventional bombs, and North Korea is building hardened missile silos within miles of their Chinese border so we will not attack the missiles with full-sized nukes. Kerry is such a fool on the issue of national security. He has not moved away from his ultra left wing anti-military position from the 1970s.

Sometimes we have to develop weapons that we hope to never use to give us a stronger negotiating position. When Iran and North Korea know we can destroy their nuclear facilities with small nuclear weapons (and without disturbing their neighbors), then these rogue states have to negotiate with us. Kerry is sending a clear signal that his election could be a catastrophic disaster for America.

I think though that when the President doesn't point out the clear conclusions we can reach about Kerry's statements, then the American people are more likely to reach those concluions on their own. This is the advantage of staying calm in a debate and quietly letting your opponent hang himself. When you don't point out all his mistakes then your opponent continues to make mistakes and the audience is allowed to draw its own conclusions, which are utlimately stronger conclusions because they are reached individually by each person.

I agree the President should have destroyed him on this. Equating us with the enemy and dismantling our weapons systems based on nothing but the hope NK will follow. Absolute insanity.

Bush should have asked Kerry what other weapons Kerry would have us throw away to make the terrorists happy. Man, I'd have never let Kerry off the mat for that one.

John F*ckin' believes in unilateral disarmament. You have the Liberal Quadrivium: 1) Higher Taxes, 2) World Government, 3) Unilateral Disarmament and 4)Appeasement in John F*ckin's world view. Its one he's held his entire life and he's been on the WRONG SIDE of history ever since his Vietnam War Days.

Kerry is just like Chamberlain. What is he going to do if North Korea starts selling nuclear weapons to terrorists and won't listen to anyone telling them to stop. In this worst-case scenario we would have to launch a first strike against NK using bunker-buster nukes and e-bombs. That's when you need your small nukes Mr. Kerry. First we just threaten to hit NK with the small nukes, but then we have to be willing to actually use them if NK won't back down. To allow NK to become the supplier of nuke weapons to terrorists and rogue states is to risk the destruction of the United States. So that's why we're developing bunker-buster nukes, Senator Fool from Massachusetts.

That "internationalist" stuff is scary. If we used our military as the UN dicates, we would be spread around the world on pointless "peacekeeping" missions while OBL and Saddam would be building the WMD to destroy us. Kerry tries hard to hide it, but he's ultra left-wing on national security policy. He wants to cede de facto control of the US military to the Europeans and all the thugs and tyrants who run the corrupt 3rd world countires in the UN. He's not qualified to be a US senator, and certainly not qualifed to be President.
