How the White House Could Slam Dunk This Election
Vanity | 10/01/04 | Bogeybob

Want to hang the Democrats on their own petard and turn the draft issue right around? Just issue this press release:

"Today the White House issued a press release on the issue of the pending bill sponsored by (D) Charles Rangel. "The White House, and this administration, strongly oppose the imposition of a draft. If the Afghanistan experience has shown us anything, it is that small numbers of superb troops and airmen can defeat hordes of a numerically superior, but less well-motivated and trained foe. We would prefer to withdraw from Iraq and concentrate our efforts elsewhere, as opposed to reinstituting conscription. We urge the American people to remember that it was Democrat Lyndon Baines Johnson who solidified a dubious reputation for instituting conscription, and a Republican, Richard Nixon, who ended it."

"We hear absolutely no criticism from Mr. Kerry, or his camp, against the efforts of his party to reinstitute the draft. We urge the people of this nation to remember who proposes a draft, and who opposes it, when we go to the polls this November."

Love: The White House

I picked this up off a local forum. I don't know the author's name.

That won't work.

I just forwarded this to my contacts at the White House, and they said they really like it, except for that "Love, The White House" part at the end. They asked me for a rewrite, fixing that issue, and then they would present it to the boss for his consideration.

So, if you can get me that rewrite ASAP, we just might end John Kerry's chances by the end of the day.

That definitely won't work.

The tenor is perfect. But I'd drop the Nixon reference and lose the "withdraw from Iraq" phrase. There shouldn't even be a notion of it, otherwise they'll fire back that it's proof the military was unprepared personnel-wise for Iraq.

Great post. Take out Johnson/Nixon and replace with "democrat" and "republican" administrations. You don't want to associate Dubya with Tricky Dick. Also point out that it is the Democrats who have authored and sponsored this legislation which is pending before the house. I'd make the case that volunteerism is one of the hallmarks of United States military superiority. I hope the WH jumps on this fast. May not make a difference for Kerry, but could definitely change some congressional elections.

How the WH could slam dunk in a positive way: You never hear Kerry expressing the Bush point about freedom in the Middle East, and freedom is the only thing that's going to end the WOT for good, in our favor. Iraq could become a beacon of freedom for the Middle East, similar to America in its promise for a better life.

Kerry's take on it, as of last night: "Our troops are occupiers in a bitterly hostile land."

While we're at it, someone should notify Zell Miller what Kerry is saying about American troops again.

i think that the bush campaign could point out better the fact that we are an ALL volunteer military and the soldiers and marines that are giving their lives are doing so as their right to protect our way of life. i spent 4 of 8 years "in harms way", i complained that i didnt want to be there but i would do it again in a heartbeat because it was right and my duty. this needs to be juxtaposed against those draftees in vietnam, credit given, they were somewhere they had no control of, this would take any edge kerry has when he states that he was in war so he knows what its like.

If you are serious, have at it. Good suggestions on this thread for editing. "Love-The White House" was a bit of sarcasm.

It might be worth looking a bit further back in history:

WWII -- Roosevelt (D) undoubtedly started draft. I presume that Truman (D) would have ended it, though.

Korean War -- I don't know if there was a draft but if there was one, I expect that it would have started under Truman (D) and ended under Eisenhower (R).

Mr. Rove told Sean Hannity to expect a couple of surprises.
I sure hope they're really good surprises!

I think that any mention of the word 'draft' in MSM is a net negative for the young voter.

They won't focus on who is behind it, only on the thought.

I see your point, but this crap has to stop. Our local station ran a network feed about a voter project (nonpartisan, yeah right) and the nonpartisan director mentione a draft again.

I'll bet many draft age people have no idea as to the facts surrounding the draft. Time to go on the offensive.
