Kerry's World: Father Knows Best

By the time John Kerry's father, Richard, published . . . . The Star-Spangled Mirror, in 1990, he should have been a mellow man. Nearly 30 years had passed since his retirement from the Foreign Service, where he'd filled mid-level posts in Washington, Berlin, and Oslo. His central issue, the cold war, had followed him into retirement with the crumbling of the Berlin Wall and rise of glasnost in Russia. . . . The Star-Spangled Mirror is a critique of moralism in America's foreign policy -- and, more than that, it is a critique of America's national character.

"Americans," he writes, "are inclined to see the world and foreign affairs in black and white." They celebrate their own form of government and denigrate all others, making them guilty of what he calls "ethnocentric accommodation -- everyone ought to be like us." As a result, America has committed the "fatal error" of "propagating democracy" and fallen prey to "the siren's song of promoting human rights," falsely assuming that our values and institutions are a good fit in the Third World. And, just as Americans exaggerate their own goodness, they exaggerate their enemies' badness. The Soviet Union wasn't nearly as imperialistic as American politicians warned, Kerry argues. "Seeing the Soviet Union as the aggressor in every instance, and the U.S. as only reacting defensively, relieves an American observer from the need to see any parallel between our use of military power in distant parts of the world, and the Soviet use of military power outside the Soviet Union," he writes. He further claims that "Third world Marxist movements were autonomous national movements" -- outside Moscow's orbit. The book culminates in a plea for a hardheaded, realist foreign policy that removes any pretense of U.S. moral superiority.

"Global Test"...
the Crimson Tide (Harvard), 11 Feb 2004, quotes Kerry from several years ago - This explains what he means by Global Test; PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW! - He would turn our sovereignty over the the UN - we could do NOTHING without the UN's approval. This piece from the Crimson Tide needs to be out there

http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=357339

The Harvard Crimson, 11 Feb 2004
The Crimson reported Kerry called for U.N. control of troops in 1970

By ZACHARY M. SEWARD
Crimson Staff Writer

“I’m an internationalist,” Kerry told The Crimson in 1970. “I’d like to see our troops dispersed through the world only at the directive of the United Nations.”

Kerry said he wanted “to almost eliminate CIA activity..."

This needs to be in ads - it needs to be gotten into Bush's hands. He needs to say: "You heard Kerry say the U.S. - if he were Pres. - would not go to war without a "Global Test" - what did he mean? He meant, as reported in The Crimson Tide - that he would relinquish America's sovereignty to the UN. We would not be allowed to defend ourselves without permission from the UN!" This need to get to FOX, to the campaign, to Rush, To EVERYWHERE - strike while the iron's hot

I see Kerry's father was "nuanced", too. How complex, how multifaceted, how cosmopolitan. How French.

He further claims that "Third world Marxist movements were autonomous national movements" -- outside Moscow's orbit.

Kerry pere was demonstrably wrong about that. Moscow and Havana were already training the Sandinistas, the FMLN of El Salvador, the Guatemalan, Honduran and Colombian guerrillas years before they came onto the world's radar screens.

The notion that these movements were autonomous is the foolish mistake of an arrogant old State Department hack who, like his son, was not as smart as he thought he was.
