Spain snubs US as France joins the big parade
The Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | October 6, 2004 | by Isambard Wilkinson in Madrid

The Spanish government snubbed the United States yesterday by cancelling an annual invitation to US troops to join the celebrations of Spain's national holiday parade and instead invited French soldiers to Madrid.

The Spanish defence minister, Jose Bono, told the COPE radio station there would be no Americans in this year's "fiesta nacional" which commemorates the day on which Christopher Columbus sighted the New World.

The national day "is not the national holiday of the United States, and no one is under any obligation to see the flag of another country in the parade, though it is a friend and an ally for sure," said Mr Bono. "This is in no way an insult nor a sign of contempt towards the United States."

However, the minister then added that Spain was "no longer subordinated" and "kneeling" before Washington. "With Bush, peace and liberty have not exactly triumphed," he said. Then in reference to the former prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, who was often lampooned as a puppet of President Bush, Mr Bono said the new Socialist administration wanted to "show its sovereignty".

Relations between Washington and Madrid have been tense since the Spanish Socialist government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero won elections in March and infuriated Washington by withdrawing troops from Iraq.

American troops have taken part in the Oct 12 military parade every year since 2001, when the government invited them out of respect for the victims of the Sept 11 attacks.

Mr Bono, who was once recorded calling Tony Blair "a complete dickhead", has suggested French troops could appear as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of Paris in 1945.

Its not like they are breaking a 200 year or even a 20 year tradition by not inviting us this year.

First: they invited French troops, I didn't know that France had any troops..
Second: they are inviting French doops because of the French Liberation of 1945, and who might I ask did that for them, certainly not the French themselves...

I for one, think that our troops have better things to do, than march in a socialist nation..

I am personally boycotting Canada, Spain, France and whatever country disrepects us.....

of course, I have little chance at this point in my life of going to Europe, but I at least won't buy their stinking products....

now Canada, Canada we are close too and we have spent thousands of dollars elsewhere because I won't go there at this time....

sorry Canadians, I'll keep my money here in the States.....

I give the French troops about thirty minutes in Spain before they surrender.

Yes, of course France has troops. . .after all, they must have someone to symbolically surrender on behalf of their country.

Just remember the that it was Al Qaeda that put the Socialists in power in Spain. We'll have to grin and bear it for now, knowing that this government does not represent the Spanish people. The Socialists will be gone next election.

We used to fritter away lots of greenbacks in Mexico and Canada, but TO HE** with them! I'm also buying as much stuff from Israel as I can...the boycott and violence against them is staggering in what it's done to their economy (America take note of what Liberal hellholes that are preyed on by Slamists look like), let alone their security. Buy American and Buy Israeli for me...Australian works well too.

Totally agreed.

I believe that Europe will be in continental war, again, within 15 years or much less.

It'll be fun to watch..As long as they attack each other and not our allies in Eastern Europe...

Then we will have to go and settle things...I wonder if it will take longer than Iraq to conquer western Europe of less...

I just think its every country for itself right now....

the world depends on the USA....its money, its leadership, its army, its stability, its techincal and scienctific superiority in many things......

but mostly, its the money....

I would just encourage everyone to buy only American made products, or at least from nations that are respectful of us...maybe Italy, Poland, England, etc...

However, the minister then added that Spain was "no longer subordinated" and "kneeling" before Washington.'

Instead they're kneeling before the Islamists who want to enslave them.

"With Bush, peace and liberty have not exactly triumphed," he said.

Really?

Take a count of the free peoples of the world in January of 2001 when Bush took office verses today.

There are tens of millions of newly free people today only because of Bush's leadership and our soldiers willingness to sacrifice for the longterm security of our country.

Let's see: this holiday is to commemorate Columbus spotting the New World for the first time. Soooooo, the Spanish decide to ask the French along to celebrate instead of the New World Americans. Makes sense to me! Hahaha. It's all for naught as we know the Vikings were there long before Columbus. But if it makes the Spanish feel important, let em have at it.

Hmmm, if Spain ever needs liberating, guess they can ask the French? Stick to American goods for now, and travel to American destinations, there are some great places here!

I'm German and I welcome every American visitor to my country. I really do. When I pass an American convoy on the Autobahn I always show them my thumbs up (if there's a cute girl behind the stearing wheel).

If you plan to visit Poland make sure to read these travel infos: http://www.gopoland.com/practical/transport.shtml. Especially the lines about car theft. Always tripple check if your car is *really* locked and don't leave it too long alone as some Pole might try to short-circuit it ;-).

I don't put Canada in the same category with France and Germany. Several European countries have continued to enjoy profitable business relationships with terrorist states. Just check out www.divestterror.org and see all the European companies listed as terrorist supporters. Some of those business relationships are sickening.

As far as I know, I don't think Canada has been providing any material support to our enemies, we merely had a political disagreement about how to deal with Iraq. I can deal with that.

Spain will become like France, Zapatero is only at the beginning of the submission of his country.
