13-Year-Olds Caught In Alleged Saturn Theft Ring

Posted on 10/06/2004 10:16:15 AM PDT by esryle

A group of teens are in custody in Washtenaw Township after a string of Saturn car thefts over the past two weeks, Local 4 reported.

Police arrested four juveniles -- two 13-year-olds, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old.

The two 13-year-olds were taken into custody after they crashed a white Saturn (pictured, below) while allegedly fleeing from police.

"Anytime you find anybody at that age driving a car really catches you by surprise," said Cmdr. David Egeler, of the Washtenaw County sheriff's office.

More than 20 Saturns from the early 1990s have been stolen in the county.

Police said the culprits break into the vehicles using keys.

"What they've been able to figure out is a way to kind of alter the key to gain access to the ignition without having to punch the ignition," Egeler said.

Police believe the teens have been spreading the word to others about how to steal the vehicles, Local 4 reported.

"We're looking for more and we're comfortable that at a certain point we'll be able to round up most everybody who's involved in it," Egeler said.

A Saturn spokesperson told Local 4 that the company was not aware of the incidents in Washtenaw County, but has reengineered the ignitions of its cars since 1997 due to similar reports.

Authorities advise owners of early-model Saturns to purchase an antitheft device

Saturns are nice little cars, but hardly what you'd call sexy.

They are stealing Saturns because they are easy....the company should bring all the steal easy vehicles back in for an upgrade...

imo

Well, with today's laws, they may be moving directly from Saturn to Uranus shortly.

That is true, if I was going to steal a car, it would be a BMW or MB or a Lexus.. Not a Saturn.. Stupid kids...

Now this is really strange, because I didn't know that 13-year-olds had the ability to get to Saturn to steal a ring. I mean, 13-year-olds can't even drive legally. Where are they going to get a rocket? And espeically one big enough to steal an entire ring of Saturn? I mean, aren't those rings supposed to be made up of billions of tiny chunks of rock or something? You would think our police would have better things to do than to go around persecuting children because of every incredible tip that ... what? ... Saturn the CAR? ... um ... nevermind!

Shalom.

This proves it... Theives are STUPID...

Now, If I was going to go through all the trouble and risk of ripping off a car, I'd go for a 2005 Mercedes S class... At least make the crime worth the time....

"allegedly, fleeing from police"

Does anyone else find the overuse of the qualifier "allegedly" to be annoying and often stupid? Left to a reporter one would say, "The sun allegedly came up this morning."

Oh come on, no way a 13-year-old car thief is going to see any jail time. But that does not mean I don't think they should.
