"REMEMBERING SADDAM" Documentary DVD now available.
Don North ^

Posted on 10/06/2004 2:02:13 PM PDT by ketchikan

This is the documentary about the 7 men who had their right hands cut off by order of Saddam who had the horror videotaped.

Don North is the journalist who was given the video of the amputations. He found the seven men, and thru his and the efforts of others the seven where brought to the US, received new prosthetics, met President Bush etc.

Go to the website to link to the WSJ article by Daniel Henninger: "Want a Different Abu Ghraib Story? Try This One"

I tracked Mr. North down and found out that no one i.e. "Sixty Minutes", "Dateline" nor "20-20" has shown much interest in covering this inspiring story.

I have been asking about this video for the past three months. What reasons are there that our media has shown no interest in it? This should be aired on TV somewhere...

So good to hear that at least some students are getting the chance to see/hear the truth. Thank you.

Don North told me he was working on a documentary about what has happened to the men since receiving their new hands. Don't know when it will be ready.

I read 22 Oct 04 Danniel Henniger's article @ http://www.opinionjournal.com that Mr. North is heading back to Iraq to help some Iraqis with their new TV station that was put together with the donations from Americans via http://www.spiritofamerica.net

They will get to see it...because some of these guys have only been told the anti American side of the story.

I'm having a conversation" with a local arts group who presented a documentary "festival" showing" left wing anti American films. These are docs like: The Corporation, Death in Gaza, Hijacking Catastrophe: 9-11, fear and the selling of the American Empire, Bush's Brain, the Yes Men.

When I complained about the one sided selection this is the response I got from the Comrade Direktor and I would appreciate any advice into how to handle it:

"Have you seen any of the films you are referring to? It appears you haven't, since you are mistaken in your characterization of them. The films we have selected to show uncover and present factual information, shocking and often painful realities, and critical analyses that viewers of corporate-controlled mass media (broadcast TV, cable news networks, commercial radio, etc.) would otherwise be denied knowledge of and access to.

The filmmakers whose work we show, whether journalists or artists, are trying to get at the truth. They reveal realities that this government is trying to hide from us, its own citizens, and that corporate media are too cowed or compromised to even seek out, let alone tell us.

The makers of these films are not propagandists, but clearsighted, courageous truthseekers.

Propaganda is not just taking and arguing one side or another. It's certainly not just people you disagree with arguing their side. Propaganda is what regimes in power feed to their subjects to keep them docile and compliant, or fearful and dependent on their protection, or to keep
themselves in power. By contrast, the films we show question the authority of those in power, challenge their lies, stir people up, open their minds, get them thinking. The films we are showing are truthful and thought- provoking, and do not serve the corporate interests represented by the present administration.

"Fairness," as you call it, if by that you mean
balancing this critical truthtelling with more of the lies we're already being fed by the corporate media, or with blatant right-wing fabrications that really ARE propaganda, is not an interest of ours, no, not at all.
There are plenty of places you can find that if that's what you're looking for. We feel no obligation to give equal time to lies."

O'Reilly, I think, interveiwed these guys and said 'why would anyone want to see people getting their hands cut off or their tongues ripped out' and just left it there.

Whether or not O'Reilley supports this documentary or not means absolutely nothing to me. For many years we have seen gruesome pictures of concentration camp victims in movies and documentaries and I have not heard anyone ask the O'Reilley's question.

What's important to remember about Hitler's victims is just as important about Saddaam's victims.

I absolutely agree! I think seeing the truth...That Saddam was in himself a WMD is extremely important for Americans to see. My point was that BOR was being a jerk! I also think the film 'Voices of Iraq' will have a positive effect on America and for President Bush...which explains why the media is not promoting it.

'Voices of Iraq' is suppose to be out next week. Two journalist-independent- went to Iraq and handed out a number of video cameras to the Iraqi citizens who just went around filming their friends and neighbors and doing interviews. The clips I have seen have been very moving and by a large part very hopeful and full of thanksgiving to America for removing Saddam. One clip that really got me was a man talking about the prison abuse at ABU GHRAIB...he said those being abused in the prison had done much worse to him in the torture chambers! I am really looking forward to seeing it. They have a web site where you can see a few clips. I really think its release will be good for President Bush!

You are on the right track by at least having a conversation with the arts group. Eventually someone will start thinking about what you are saying and begin questioning the validity of the info they are presenting. This won't come about easily nor quickly. I am just learning to have much more patience with this sort of thing. Even with my own children. Instead of preaching I am trying to learn how to ask smart questions that make them think.
