Voter registration process causes concern (Irregularities probed in 3 Florida Counties)

TALLAHASSEE — Law enforcement officials are investigating voter registration irregularities in at least three counties in Florida, and election supervisors fear that the problem is so widespread it could lead to massive confusion on Election Day.

Third-party groups, including tax-exempt organizations known as 527s that engage in political activity, have been conducting voter mobilization drives in an attempt to persuade new or apathetic voters to turn out in support of their causes — mostly Democratic — on Nov. 2.

But problems with the applications, already reported to authorities in Miami-Dade, Duval, Monroe, Leon, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, could result in people who thought they had registered showing up at the polls only to discover they aren't eligible to vote.

Officials are investigating in Miami-Dade, Leon and Pinellas counties.

Of the forms collected by the voter mobilization groups, many are incomplete, have suspicious signatures or may have been forged, elections officials said Wednesday.

Many of the third-party groups delivered bundles of applications, some collected as long ago as January, on the final day. Cowles said he received about 15,000 registration applications Monday, which he called "a disservice to voters."

The Dems are setting everything in motion, to try to steal the election.

I am firmly convinced that they perpetrated a significant amount of voter fraud in 2000, and they were sure that was going to be sufficient to elect Gore. But then the Cuban Americans turned out, and enough voted for Bush, to counteract the Dem fraud -- so they want to really make sure this time.

I think that is the real reason they hate President Bush, because they were SURE, absolutely sure, that with the stacks of fraudulent votes Gore will win, and they didn't succeed to steal the election that time.

Now they are really going all out.

The Republicans should mobilize everyone, and have a campaign to check and verify ALL the votes, especially those of new registrants, to make sure they are legit. Surely the Dems couldn't object to it, that would be admitting they are committing voter fraud and know it.

Why haven't there been Republican voter drives?

I don't understand how you could let anybody else deliver your voter registration application. All you have to do is take it, fill it out, and mail it in yourself.

our side is so far behind in trying to mount an effort to combat this - I don't see what can be done in 25 days time.

emulate what, a fradulent registration process and the subsequent "if you don't show up, we'll cast your vote for you" mechanism.

You are correct. This will be the ploy. Dem voters showing up at polling places and being turned away because their registrations were invalid to begin with.

And guess who will be screaming like stuck pigs all day Tuesday, November 2nd?

They'll use this tactic to throw the whole election into doubt. It will be a sad day for this Nation if GWB does not win by a landslide.

Get used to hearing the word over and over and over and over...

Disenfranchisement!

"conducting voter mobilization drives in an attempt to persuade new or apathetic voters to turn out in support of their causes — mostly Democratic — on Nov. 2."

Why did republicans not do the same?

Of course rejecting applications because they are not filled out or have non-exitent addresses will be considered more GOP intimidation tactics.

I live in Pinellas County. I have heard absolutely n-o-t-h-i-n-g about vote fraud investigations here. The only stories about voting in Hillsborough I've read in the TimesTribPlanet are accusations that Hillsborough County Elections Supervisor Buddy Johnson is a riiiiiiiight wing Chrisssssssssstian. Anybody know where there's any news accounts about fraud accusations in Pinellas?

FRAUD writ large. The dems are gonna cause a civil war in this country. I used to think that folks who said things like that were a bit off the deep end but I don't any more.

you are missing the point - these are not the registrations of real people flocking to Dem voting centers and filing out their forms. these are forms filled out by Dem operatives in the 527s going through motor voters lists and phone books and welfare rolls and anything else they can get their hands on to cross reference names and addresses of living (or otherwise) human beings who aren't on the rolls.

come election night, just before the polls close, in polling places in Dem strongholds - the votes of these now registered people who don't show up, have their votes cast for them.

let's hope it plays out that way - but I don't think that is the plan here. having a post election gripe session isn't going to win it for them, they want to push votes through, because they know that once they are counted, there is no way those votes are going to be removed from the tally. even if total fraud can be deomonstrated, no one is going to remove those votes post-election day from a tally in Florida that gave the state to Kerry, and flip it to Bush.

Wow... thats a pretty impressive feat to pull off 300,000 times. How about instead of obsessing over calling them CHEATERS we spend more time trying to get conservatives to register to vote?
All this handwringing and accusation going on at FR is not doing conservatives any good. If you witness an actual case of this, tell the authorities... otherwise, i think we should focus on being productive.

Theres been a lot of Republican vote drives I went door to door several times this summer. The thing is were not turning in fraudulent voter registrations with phoney sig's and false addy's the dims are and it's very worrisome the massive vote fraud that is under way as we speak.

There have been. We just haven't been as, shall we say, "show offish" as the Dems. Don't think Repubs. haven't been registering new people...legally.

"the massive vote fraud that is under way as we speak."
You know of specific cases of this? Please tell us who specifically did what? Why haven't you called the authorities about this?
Look... my point is, unless you are going to do something about it, sitting here obsessing and calling the dems cheaters is only going to hurt morale.

Thats sure a releif to hear cuz the only ones I've seen or heard about are Dem groups. What groups are registering conservatives? Are they getting them in as large numbers as the dems?

Trying to stop and reveal fraud IS productive.

I don't disagree that we should work hard to register voters and get out the vote. But real people can't counteract the fraud of registering thousands of non-existent people, or non-citizens.

In CA Bob Dornan lost to Loretta Sanchez, because a bunch of noncitizens, even illegal aliens voted for her. It was PROVEN, but they didn't overturn the election anyway.

This fraud needs to be stopped and exposed BEFORE the election.
