More Than 200 Arrested Protesting Columbus Day Parade in Denver

DENVER (AP) - More than 200 sign-waving and chanting protesters were arrested Saturday after blocking a Columbus Day parade for more than an hour, police said. Police said they began making arrests after ordering the group of about 600 protesters to leave when the parade was about a block away. The 230 protesters who were arrested were charged with loitering and disobedience to a lawful order.

There were no reports of violence or injuries.

Police said the protesters, many of whom were American Indians, gathered at the state Capitol, then marched to the parade route in downtown Denver.

Most carried signs, including one that read "Not Genocide, Celebrate Pride" and another showing a crossed out picture of Columbus with the word "savage" over it.

Adam K. Becenti, a University of Colorado-Boulder student of Navajo descent, said the protest was meant to educate people about the inaccuracies in history books.

"We're grown up to believe he was the first person here" which denies the American Indians' place in history and ignores their genocide, he said.

But Carter Barnard, a member of the Sons of Italy in America, said the protesters had no right to delay the event.

"We have a permit for the parade," he said. "We don't try to stop them from their celebrations."

About 150 people were arrested during an anti-Columbus Day rally in Denver in 2000.

American Indians are a bunch of whiny cry babies.
They lost the wars and just can't accept the fact that it was never "their land" to begin with.
However, they sure don't mind the white mans cash in their casinos.

It's time the American Indian start worrying about his own community and stop complaining over long dead injustices.

I thought Indians were now "indigenous peoples"

Just another group doing their part -

I think the best thing about the past is that it is in the past -

The policy that works is the old saying that we should learn from the past - so that we don't make the same mistakes.

To continue to live in the past - as some do - doesn't do anyone any good - it only keeps hate alive - on both sides.

just my thoughts - Get over the past - and Get on with your life. The future is what you make it and if one carries only hatred into the future - the future is doomed right from the start -

American Indians had no concept of property rights so there was nothing to "steal." One tribe would move against another in unmerciful slaughters and that would be "property exchange." Civilized men owe nothing to savages.

The Giuliani Family and the Kerry syndicate put the made men behind bars or made them run to ground. The power vacuum was filled by other ethnicities.

Another example of Welfare's outcome. It's WRONG and CRUEL to GIVE money to people. It tends to make them resentful that they are dependent. Time to END this brutality and give people their pride back.

Don't paint Indians with such a wide brush. There are nutcases from any group and many Indians have no use at all for the PCBS the leftists put out.

Most of the Indians I know would be more at home here on FR than wasting their time demonstrating against Columbus Day.

These people need to get a life. They need to worry about their own community, where alcoholism and unemployment is a serious problem.

There is clear evidence of a culture in the Americas that predated what we now call the Native American or Indian culture. It possibly came by way of the South Pacific. Of course, some modern people of Indian ancestry want to cover that up. The fact is that you can't undo history, so get over it.
