TRENTON - .....Gillespie got his first taste of campaigning by working on his mother's successful nonpartisan bid to become the first woman elected to the local school board.
During his senior year at Pemberton Township High School in 1979, Gillespie launched his own political career as president of the student council.
Then, in college at Catholic University, he got a rather unusual start in Washington politics - as a Senate parking attendant.
On Gillespie's 22nd birthday, he started a job running a district office for then-Florida Rep. Andy Ireland - a Democrat. In 1984, Ireland changed parties to run on the Republican ticket with President Reagan, and Gillespie changed with him.
"That was my first campaign and I've been in campaigns ever since," Gillespie said.
After spending a decade working with former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, Gillespie landed a job with RNC Chairman Haley Barbour in 1996.
Gillespie then built his own private practice, Quinn, Gillespie & Associates, into an influential lobbying force.
In 2000, Gillespie set out to work on President Bush's first presidential campaign, moving to Philadelphia, Texas and eventually Florida to help pull out a victory.
