My mom wants me to find her a handgun. Something a 55 old 130 lb woman can handle. She has mild arthritis in her right hand so something where I can adjust the trigger pressure. She wants it to have enough power to knockdown an assailant without having to empty the thing into him. She also wants somethign without a lot of recoil so it doesn't knock her down. I would think reliability, ease of operation, and a safety that is both easy to operate and easy to determine if its engaged would be important?
Any ideas?
Any thougts on an automatice vs a revolver? Your help is appreciated.
I would buy her an A first
I've got a .357 revolver I load with .32 ammo for my wife. Hollow points will stop a man, .32 ammo won't kick too hard, and a revolver is probably easier to work for someone without a lot of experience.
Take a look at the lady s&w .38 revolvers. At least a good place to start.
She probably just needs to sell her R.
.380 Bersa semi auto.
It is nice light weight easy to fire. No major problems or complaints. good self defense weapon.
Check back in 1/2 hour. You should have about 300 replies by then....#8-)
What have you done to tick her off this time?
S&W 38 Special with a 4 inch barrel. Inexpensive used, reliable, simple, effective.
Typo?
.40 with corbons. Kicks like a 9mm. Maybe a Sig,HK or S&W depending what she wants to spend. Check out the 4013 S&W. They don't kick much. I dont believe in smaller calibers than .40, I wouldn't trust my life to a .32 or a 9mm.
"F" for effort.
Try spellcheck before posting a vanity in the wrong section of FR.
.38spl S&W Airlite. Perfect for a woman. Small handle fits their smaller hand and very very light. .38spl is VERY effective up close.
4" barrel .357 revolver. It can be loaded with .38 loads or .357 after she practices a bit, no safety, just pull the trigger or cock the hammer then pull for a lighter squeeze.
The 4" will fit in a bathrobe pocket or purse.
She will need to learn to aim (this means practice and training) no matter what she gets.
Take her to a range that rents stuff so she can try various guns. I'll bet that lots of folks will come over so she can try theirs; this is very common at my range. A great way to make friends and meet people.
Find a good training course, NRA certified, either defensive pistol or basic "gun in the home" type, before she buys anything. She may or may not want to get one once she knows more of the ins-and-outs.
The muzzle velocity of .32 ammo in a .357 is a bit low. You may want to try .38's. ;)
If it's possible, you and your mom should go gun shopping together. Something as simple as the size/feel of the grip can determine how easy the gun is going to work for her.--(Especially if she has a bit of arthritis). Thus, buying it for her is not in her best interest.
Your mom sounds like a wise woman! good luck!
i would sign her up for a NRA class first. Most ranges also have demo models available. Knowledge first, my friend, please.
NRA.org for classes and info.
Definitely go with a .357 revolver loaded with .38 special +P hollowpoints or Glaser Safety Slugs. If you want to spend the $ you can have the trigger tuned by a gunsmith.
You might want to check your post. That ain't possible.
