NEW YORK - They played the obligatory classics: "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Girls on Film." But when Simon Le Bon ripped into the chorus of the new single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise," the sun suddenly illuminated Times Square as if to officially mark a new day for Duran Duran.
As the original five members performed for "Good Morning America" last week, it seemed the planets had finally aligned for a band that had been ignored through its ever-changing lineup and lackluster albums of the past ten years.
The British quintet once created a fan hysteria that was compared to the Beatles', and they are largely credited for ushering in the music video age with their innovative and exotic clips. Still, until recently, they couldn't buy the sort of publicity they're now enjoying.
"We are really pleased to be back in the history books where for a while it looked as though we were being written out of them," Le Bon told The Associated Press, commenting on the Lifetime Achievement award MTV finally bestowed upon the video pioneers last year and the sudden excitement over Duran Duran's 12th album, "Astronaut."

FYI - you might want to do a little research about them and their love for America. Unlike so many of their spoiled contemporaries, Simon Le Bon and the other members of Duran, Duran are big America boosters, and they have spoken publicly of their love of the USA and their appreciation of the opportunity for success our country provided them. Le Bon stated in an interview about a year ago that their hit song "RIO" was an allegorical anthem to America. For the record, I'm not a fan of theirs, I'm too old, but I do appreciate the fact that with so much of the rest of the world against us, at least they're on our side!

The 80's music genre was the best. Having been a teenager during those time, hearing this makes me happy (especially since they were one of my favorites).
John Taylor was a hottie!
It's interesting how much variety you'd see on a Top 40 list in the 80s....lots of experimental stuff along with the schlocky pop, etc. Contrast that to today.

No, I don't. They kinda got lost in the shuffle what with OMD (If you leave), Inxs, Culture Club, Modern Romance and all those other bands coming up at once. I only have their first album.
I have been buying CDs with the more obscure LA pop songs that were in light rotation on MTV during that time. The soundtrack to Valley Girl is just awesome! (snicker snicker - I said awesome).

Wow, they even pryed Roger Taylor away from his life. That guy said he'd never go back and I really started to believe him. Someone told me the album is pretty good, something about the original line up I guess.
Duran Duran was one of the characters from Barbarella (I assume the comic strip AND the film).

I'm with ya on that one! When I caught DD on GMA last week, the first words out of my mouth were "Wow, John Taylor is still HOT!"

Hey, let me tell you something. I adored Simon, but when I had the chance to meet the guys, Nick was the best one of the bunch. Polite, attentive, just really sweet.
