Kerry plans a hunting trip as part of his push for votes of social conservatives

PITTSBURGH (AP) --

John Kerry planned to go hunting Thursday, showing he's a regular guy to voters who might harbor some doubts.

Kerry adviser Mike McCurry said it's important in the final days of the campaign that voters "get a better sense of John Kerry, the guy."

That means the Democratic senator plans to spend some of the dwindling time before Election Day shooting at geese, watching baseball and talking about his faith.

It's all part of an effort to win over swing voters who may be open to voting against President Bush but aren't sure they feel any connection with Kerry.

While the Democrat campaigns as an all-American, his political opponents are working to leave voters with a different impression. Bush tells voters that Kerry is on the "left bank" of society, opposing a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

"We stand for marriage and family, which are the foundations of our society," Bush said during a stop Wednesday in Mason City, Iowa. "We stand for the Second Amendment, which protects every individual American's right to bear arms."

As Kerry goes hunting near Youngstown, Ohio, Thursday morning, readers of the local newspaper will see a full-page ad bought by the National Rifle Association that says Kerry is posing as a sportsman while opposing gun-owners' rights.

Fine for rifles, but how could you shotgun like that?

Correct me if I am wrong, but won't this have the effect of pushing animal rights wackos to vote for Nader? Will he not lose more votes to Nader than he will get from socially conservative people by doing this???

It just doesn't seem logical that a known anti-gun Senator would do this for very hard to get conservative votes at the risk of losing part (a big part) of his base.

The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting.

The NRA and other groups are making a mistake whenever they invoke the "sporting purposes" claim.

It only allows gun-grabbing statists like Kerry the opportunity to go duck hunting and pretend to be pro-gun.
