NEW YORK — One person's trash is literally another person's treasure, if that person happens to be a freegan (search). They’re not vegans who refuse to eat meat or animal products; these people eat out of the garbage.
Freegans generally are activists. They believe we live in a capitalistic society gone mad where food, like so many other items, is needlessly tossed out.
Adam Weissman and some freegan friends, none of whom are homeless or destitute, dig through garbage for food in Manhattan's trendy Upper East Side (search). They refuse to economically support companies that make or sell the items, because they equate doing so with encouraging further exploitation of our natural resources.
"I'm saying we're too materialistic and it's ruining our lives,” Weissman said. "We're wasting enough food to literally feed every starving hungry person on the planet."

Well, George Costanza said that he and his family would eat out of the garbage all the time. And besides, that eclair was really hovering above the garbage can.
I found a Freegan website that gives tips on how to eliminate "work" from your life. Kind of tells ya where these folks are coming from.
Liberals robbing from the poor... go figure.
Nobody in this report noted the reason why this stuff gets pitched is government regulations requiring expiration dates on these items and they are pulled from the shelves to protect stores from getting sued.

I knew one of these types my first time in college. He was your typical anti-corporate, anti-capitalist student activist. He ate only garbage and lived in a tree house in order not to participate in our evil consumer culture. The tree house was in his parent's backyard in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city.

They're right though....grocery stores by law have to throw out stuff on the expiration date even though it will be good for days beyond that. So much good stuff is tossed so go for it, freegans....although don't forget to clean up after yourselves.
Wouldn't getting people to stop eating "corporate food" bring about freegan starvation?
I saw these nutjobs on the news today. One girl claimed she had never gotten sick from eating garbage. I have a feeling that any illness she gets is blamed on secret govt bioweapons.
