CHICAGO - The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
The ISRA is predicting a rough ride to Election Day for some Democratic candidates for the Illinois General Assembly. This comes in the wake of an announcement today by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan that she will be pushing for legislation this fall that would impose a state-wide ban on semiautomatic rifles, pistols and shotguns. Madigan, and other proponents of the legislation claim the action is needed in light of the sunset of the federal ban on semiautomatic firearms.
"Congress gave the federal semiautomatic weapons ban an entire decade to prove its worth," commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "When it was all said and done, the ban proved to be worthless, and Congress wisely allowed the law to sunset. Now along comes Lisa Madigan and the Chicago gun control movement with an attempt to compound the failure of the federal ban with a state-wide ban. I'm not sure what Madigan and company think they'll accomplish by proposing this ban less than two weeks before Election Day, but they may find their proposal fraught with unintended consequences."
"There are a lot of tight House and Senate races south of Interstate 80," continued Pearson. "Many of the Democratic candidates in those races may wake up and find that tomorrow is day one of the campaign all over again. The only question important to downstate hunters and sportsmen will be whether or not the Democratic candidates support, or reject the Chicago- inspired attempt to ban their guns. Beginning today, the ISRA will be putting forth every effort to make sure that Illinois hunters and sportsmen know what is at stake here. They'll know that Madigan's semiautomatic firearm ban will be an acid-test."
"Lisa Madigan's proposal will really strike a nerve with many people in this state - gun control is a very emotional issue that will swing many down state voters this fall. It's conceivable that Lisa Madigan may have cost her dad, House Speaker Mike Madigan, his majority in the Illinois House."
I don't know much about guns. My dad has an cheap old chinese SKS. Would that be banned?
insert Butthead laugh here.
Actually, it may turn out that they unwittingly may have aimed higher..... 8~)
IF this is true, this is the most radical ban yet. Why? For someone to ban shotguns, pistols, and semi-automatic rifles means that most hunting in the state would cease. This sounds like something from Nazi Germany. I really want to know if this is true. Very dangerous proposal.
As a semi-auto - the SKS would be banned. This is what happens when Democrats are in control (as they most assuredly are here in Illinois). They try to do what they want, without fear. You really get to see what the Democrats are all about in those areas where they have a near monopoly on public offices.
If it's a semi-automatic (needs no assistance in loading the next round, you just pull the trigger and the rounds go downrange just as fast as you can pull it) yes. And an SKS especially would be banned because it's 'military style'. That's the joke of most of these stupid laws. It doesn't matter how functional the weapon is, if it LOOKS like it's a military style 'assault' weapon, it's included.
Anti-gun people are as dumb as they THINK the electorate is.
If your dad wants to get rid of that SKS, I have a nice warm home for it here in Michigan where the rights of gun owners haven't been trampled......yet.
Sounds like this goes well beyoned the Assault Weapons ban, seems they want to ban all semiautomatic weapons, which probably consist of about 3/4 of all weapons.
Yes.
"Daddy what have I done?? I was just trying to be a do-gooder.??!!"
If one state adopts measures like this it will set a new precedent. We don't want this, it could spread to the rest of the country. Isn't Illinois already crime ridden as it is? It'll just get worse when every thug out there knows that every law-abiding citizen is a soft target.
Yup
Wasn't it a Kennedy who ran for congress in DC on an anti gun platform in the midst of the sniper spree?
No reason to question the intelligence of liberals.
What the heck has happened to Illinois? They are starting to look like an island, especially if W takes IA, WI, Mn...

What happened? Daley and Blagojevich.
Anything that goes "bang" will be targeted eventually.
Thanx, glad I'm safe here with Toto in Kansas :)
Join the NRA and fight back.
Unfortunately Michigan has the same law being proposed.

Madigan saw how well gun control worked for Chicago (crime and murder rates some of the highest in the nation!) and decided to do it to the rest of the state. Apart from King Daley, we have a trial lawyer as a governor. 'Nuff said.
The Illinois GOP keeps self-destructing. However, Democrats with such idiotic moves keep giving us second chances!
