Kerry wanted to ban the TV show COPS.
Federal News Service -- HEARING OF THE SENATE COMMERCE, SCIENCE AND TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE -- L/N
| OCTOBER 20, 1993
| John Kerry
Posted on 10/21/2004 2:11:32 PM PDT by TFine80
SEN. KERRY: Now, you know, here in Washington, if Jay Leno isn't working for you, you can switch quickly over to -- I think it's Channel 5 -- and pick up cops running around with people at night, you know, intruding into homes, arresting, people crying, all these kinds of things that seem to titillate. Why are our cops being allowed to do that? I mean, there is an amazing amount of cooperation in the making of that. Why, if it is not good, are they permitted to allow these people to follow them into the homes and everywhere else?
ATTY GEN. RENO: That's one of the first issues I addressed when I took office because I had made it a practice to avoid such situations like that in Miami and I've taken steps to try to make sure that the department complies with the thought that police should not be -- or at least agents of the department should not be involved in such efforts.
SEN. KERRY: I know you can't mandate it with respect to all local police, et cetera, but have you taken some kind of step with the Police Chiefs Association and others around the country?

See for example the asset forfeiture laws. In this case it isn't whether you annoy them, only whether they like your assets enough to take them. I know - asset forfeiture sucks. I heard about some guy who had tens of thousands of dollars on him - but no contraband of any kind. They confiscated his money and demanded that he prove that it was earned legitimately. WTF? I'm not allowed to have scads of cash on me? I can understand failure to declare at the border or similar - but this was on an American street.

Hi, Janet... If that was your plan - to AVOID such situations, why did you order this years later IN Miami???

Uncanny, having just written to you, the then scroll down the main FR teletype and find this example of a leftist, a fan of government by judiciary, trying to distance the people from cops.

I take it he didn't have a problem with cops invading a Florida house with weapons and cameras to extract a five year old kid and send him back to a communist dictator.

Terrible (as in resemblance) picture but apparently the only one online of her. Want to hate her more? She works (worked) for NARAL, 2003.

And Reno had a terrific technique for limiting the "intrusion" of the press during raids and arrests... Mace and beat the TV photographers! It worked during the Elian raid!
