NBC BLOWS A HOLE IN NY TIMES' EXPLOSIVES STORY (KERRY SPOT)
The Kerry Spot, NRO ^ | 10/25/04 | Jim miclacevski

KERRY SPOT

Jim Miklaszewski of NBC News pretty much dismantled the New York Times attack on behalf of Kerry today.

NBC News: Miklaszewski: “April 10, 2003, only three weeks into the war, NBC News was embedded with troops from the Army's 101st Airborne as they temporarily take over the Al Qakaa weapons installation south of Baghdad. But these troops never found the nearly 380 tons of some of the most powerful conventional explosives, called HMX and RDX, which is now missing. The U.S. troops did find large stockpiles of more conventional weapons, but no HMX or RDX, so powerful less than a pound brought down Pan Am 103 in 1988, and can be used to trigger a nuclear weapon. In a letter this month, the Iraqi interim government told the International Atomic Energy Agency the high explosives were lost to theft and looting due to lack of security. Critics claim there were simply not enough U.S. troops to guard hundreds of weapons stockpiles, weapons now being used by insurgents and terrorists to wage a guerrilla war in Iraq.” (NBC’s “Nightly News,” 10/25/04)

If Jill Abramson, managing editor of the New York Times, had a shred of concern over her paper's reputation for getting the facts right never mind objectivity or fairness, she would be running the correction - or at least this blatantly contradictory information - in the giant headline font and above-the-fold location that today's story got. But I guess the interest in echoing the sentiments of Maureen Dowd is more important than getting it right at the Old Gray Lady.

"How does NBC contradict NYT here?"

My guess is that NBC knew if they didn't, somebody else would -- then they would come off looking as bad as CBS does these days. IMO, they chose to live to propagandize another day.

It would take somewhere around 19 tractor trailers to move this quantity- 380x2000=760000lbs divided by 40000lb capacity in a 40ft trailer= 19 trailers- it's safe to assume you wouldn't be able to 'sneak' this from the warehouse.

New York Times deliberately misled its readers

It's clear in re-reading the Monday NY Times story which Drudge still has linked from his website that the Times deliberately attempted to mislead its readers about the timing of the disappearance of the dangerous high explosives. They knew from their Pentagon interviews that the site had been searched by US troops in April and May 2003 with no explosives found, yet not only did they not state this outright but instead allowed this quote to go unchallenged:

Earlier this month, in a letter to the I.A.E.A. in Vienna, a senior official from Iraq's Ministry of Science and Technology wrote that the stockpile disappeared after early April 2003 because of "the theft and looting of the governmental installations due to lack of security."

The fact that the high explosives disappeared before April 10, 2003, before the arrival of the US troops, was deliberately not reported so that readers would get the false impression that US forces had failed to secure the depot. The reality is that there is no culpability for "lack of security" on the part of the US, and the Times new it when they ran this story.

Let's go, pajamahadeen! Call talk shows, write letters to the editor, email news editors on TV and papers all across the nation(*************

Right on....They're all in bed by now - or in a drunken stupor.

Just picture them all coming in tomorrow with all the pjajmahadeen mail!

Excellent point. The Slimes and IAEA have translated the Iraqi official's letter as describing "looting", which implies a few broken windows and terrorist carrying the stuff out by hand, mule or anything but the huge trailers necessary to move it.

Just heard George Nouri (sp?) (on Coast to Coast am radio program) read NBC's contradiction of the NYT off Drudge's site.

Only a half hour earler Nouri had reported the NYT story without the NBC component -- apparently he just got the news the NYT was WRONG-O.

Says he doesn't know why this got reported this way -- says it must be there's something political going on. Think so, George?

If the big shot is accurate, and the shot that was taken from the stage and used in another post is accurate, it looks about the size of a pre-Clinton rally in Gainesville, Florida, where I and others freeped in 1992 (way back when there was no freeping, just free Republicans), including a draft-dodging duck. There were about 30K people there listening to BJ and the Bore, all told.

New rule of thumb with liberal events: Take the 'fire department' estimate. Divide in half. Multiply by 3/5ths.

That is the number ABC News 6 was reporting at noon time

Like I said .. I'm not an expert in number counting ..

Good catch.

But I'm sure that the press will spin it so that Saddam's totalitarian Baath state simply didn't notice 19 trucks full of high explosive driving out of this ammunitions depot. Of course, these 19 trucks must have been loaded in the moments after the invasion, too. There's no way that Bush didn't know exactly where these were (like the superefficient IAEA did) and have them under his immediate control in a war zone (like the omnipotent IAEA did), Bush MUST have failed to catch the loading of the 19 trucks and where they went. /sarcasm

I bet it's because Bush didn't have a Kerry-esque PLAN. /sarcasm

The press uses the "compress time" trick to obtain the desired results quite often. I'm disturbed because I cannot find an article on MSNBC's website that discloses this new information. The article linked from this thread still contains the misleading information.

Nor I. But I thought the Rats were calling it at 100K (not the 30K I'm sayin' it looks like). I'm just saying what the crowd really looked like from my prior experience, not giving it any special crowd-counting expertise. :)

, that Kerry was caught exploiting an UNTRUE story.*******************

He jumped the gun without checking the facts (like he didn't know) but - for public consumption -

Can we put our safety in the hands of a man who jumps the gun, without checking the facts, to run our country - not to mention handle foreign policy?"

This is why I think that the press since they hold special privledge in the constitution should be able to be sued for malpractice ( the editors) and disbarred for this kind of stuff!

**************,

Actually, they can be held accountable, if it's shown that they knew it was untrue and did it under "malice of forethought" - this covers even "public figures"
