LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Virginia-based religious rights group has filed a federal lawsuit against the city for its refusal to permit the display of a banner with the phrase "Jews who believe in Jesus."
The American Center for Law and Justice maintains the city violated the constitutionally protected rights of free speech and liberty.
"The City permits a wide variety of religious and secular banners to be displayed publicly on streets. The decision to censor this banner was made strictly on the basis of the content of the banner," senior counsel Stuart J. Roth said in a statement Monday.
The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on behalf of Michael Brown, Pastor of the Messianic Jewish group Adat Y'shua Ha Adon. It calls for an injunction that would prevent the city from baring the banner.

The phrase "Jews who believe in Jesus" makes no more sense than "Christians who believe in Muhammad". If you believe in Jesus, you're a Christian, not a Jew!
Liberals really believe in free speech, don't they?!
Jewishness is no more purely a religious matter. There are plenty of 'Jews' around who are actually atheists and are still considered Jewish by their community.
A Jew who comes to believe that Jesus was the Messiah can still remain part of his ethnic community while maintaining his own opinion on Jesus.
Not enough info in this article (I read the entire thing). There was no mention of the official reason the city gave for denying the required permit for this banner. Perhaps it was too large to meet the ordinances, or perhaps it was to be hung in a place that didn't meet the ordinances. Just not enough information here.
Not so.
Being "Jewish" is no different for and Israeli Citizen than being an American is to being a citizen of the United States of America.
Besides. Once a "Jew", always a Jew.
How do you separate your 'heritage' from your religion?
I'm Irish and believe in Jesus. Jews who believe in Jesus remain Jews. --Marty
"How do you separate your 'heritage' from your religion? "
Sorry.
Meant to say "How do you separate your 'heritage' from your nationality?".

Not to mention the fact that Jesus was a jew.
Are you a rabbi who makes religious rulings for the Jewish community about who can be considered a Jew?
As someone wrote on another thread, I can wear funny hats and ride in tiny cars in the 4th of July parade, but I can't declare myself a Shriner.
One biblical writer thought it big enough that he wrote a letter to the Jewish Christians, called "Hebrews" in modern vernacular.
Actually, I thought that was the definition of a shriner!
Actually the LA City Council rejected that as too moderate.
There are very many Messianic Jews - Christians by belief but Jewish by race.
Yes he was/is! Amen.

huh?
It could be argued that all Christians are Jews.
"For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God." -- Romans 2:28-29
Take it up with them:
ADAT Y'SHUA EXISTS TO:
* Proclaim the Gospel of Yeshua (Jesus) here and abroad, especially to fellow Jews;
* Promote anointed, Messianic Jewish worship;
* Provide Messianic Jewish discipleship;
* Perform ministry and good deeds as Yeshua desires us to; and,
* Preserve our Jewish identity and heritage.We have worship services on the Jewish Sabbath, observe the Jewish lifecycle events like B'ris and Bar Mitzvah, and celebrate the Jewish holidays throughout the year, but all centered on Yeshua the Messiah. Jews and Gentiles alike are welcome in our services, held in the West San Fernando Valley each week, and there is no charge to attend. Our congregation provides an excellent opportunity for Jewish people to continue in their Jewishness, but have it centered on Yeshua the Messiah. We also provide an opportunity for Gentile believers who have a love for Jewish people, and want to help us in our purposes, to join us and learn more about Messianic Judaism.
Our congregation does not have membership dues, nor do we charge for High Holiday Services. The expenses for our congregation are paid for out of free-will offerings that the members and attendees give to the congregation out of love for the Lord.
