Florida: Lawsuit alleges fraud in voter registration

Several South Florida residents are suing a nonprofit agency, saying the group conducted a voter registration drive, paid workers for each application and purposely withheld applications until after the registration deadline.

The lawsuit against the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now says the nonprofit group asked several South Florida residents to register to vote during a summer petition to get a minimum-wage amendment on the ballot.

The lawsuit, which has 11 plaintiffs, was filed Friday against ACORN in Broward County Circuit Court. ACORN is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families.

Solicitors were paid $2 per voter registration application, which is against federal and state law, according to the suit filed by Fort Lauderdale attorney Bill Scherer.

While it is legal to pay workers to register voters, the pay cannot be based on the number of voters registered. In addition, the lawsuit alleges that ACORN copied and sold the applications to America Families United, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit group. This week, a former employee handed over 179 registration applications that were never sent to the supervisor of elections offices in Broward or Miami-Dade counties.

The deadline for the application was Oct. 4.

''The whole operation was fraudulent,'' said Scherer, a well-known Republican attorney, who is a member of the Bush-Cheney '04 legal team in Florida.

ACORN representatives deny the claims. ''There's absolutely no truth to these allegations,'' said Faith Gay, ACORN attorney. A rogue employee held onto the applications and turned them over to a lawyer, she said.

The organization would never break the law, she said. The employee was fired for faulty voter registration practices. ''The allegations are basically conduct that the [employee] engaged in without the permission or knowledge of ACORN,'' Gay said.

"''There's absolutely no truth to these allegations,'' said Faith Gay, ACORN attorney."

That's way too easy. Where do they find these people?

Hmmmmn.

And just WHAT PARTY were on those 179 voter registration forms that ACORN DID NOT hand in?

Why do I suspect that ACRON is lying out their bottom-plates on this?

How many different locations have reported the same activites by that same organization. I'd suggest that soon after the first of the year, that organization will be looking at its non-profit status being revoked. Unless of course, the 9th Circus Court is involved.

Broward county RE-Mailed 72,000 absentee ballots to people that already received them. The election officials told any to call that did not receive a ballot. They are now re-mailing 72,000 ballots that can very easily cause double votes for one person.

Non-profit status? Fiddle-de-dee. The magic word here, m'friend, is RICO. These are **exactly** the sort of activities that RICO was in theory designed to prosecute, specifically, a demostrably repetitive pattern of specific criminal actions.

You are so right. My fear is that the Administration will not come down as hard as they should. No matter what they do, the MSM will be screaming "witch hunt".

We should just outlaw private voter registration efforts and require that forms can only be distributed or accepted by the registrar of voters or the post office (for mail in registration). Registering to vote is no more complex an operation for the average citizen than getting a drivers license or paying your water bill. A responsible and concerned citizen is no more in danger of being deprived of his right to vote by requiring he register himself, than he is deprived of electricity by requiring him to pay his own electric bill. It is complete nonsense.

Is that just for Florida or all over the country? I live in Missouri. The daughter of a friend worked for a democrat organization, registering voters. I forgot which one, but can find out. She was paid based on number of registrations. Not per registration, but if she got less than the target amount, she received $6.00/hr. If she got more registrations than the target minimum, she was paid $10.00/hr.
