PA: GOTV field report

Posted on 10/31/2004 7:14:13 PM PST by 1stFreedom

Just got back from PA GOTV effort. I'm tired, so excuse any mistakes and spelling errors. I'll post extraneous detains in my comment below this thread.

Fri: 26 Pro-Life New Yorkers drive down to Allentown (I wonder how many people were singing Billy Joel's "Allentown" on the way down.)

SAT: AM -- Saw VP Cheney Saturday morning in Nazareth, PA at a rally. Great motivator, got the crowd pumped up.

Mid Day -- Went door to door to visit Republican voters in Forks PA -- many receptive, only one rejection. This area is very spread out and we were not able to hit all the houses.

5:00 attended mass where one couldn't tell at all that an earthshattering election was about to take place. It did get a slight mention in the prayers requests however.

6 - 9:00pm -- Called a GAZILLION PA Republicans (for the gazallionth time -- been doing that from NY). I think some of them are actually starting to recognize my voice.

10:00pm + help create maps for Sunday's events.. MoveOn.Commies check in to the same hotel.

Sunday morning - noon - We drive to Philadelphia to target black Churches with literature.

Others groups target Catholic churches in the area.

Very organized effort, and some union people got confrontational with a few people (Surprised?). But for the most part, successful aside from an occassional priest who is more loyal to the Democratic party than the Catholic Church.

(According to DU, one priest took our lit off of cars and berated "single" issue voting even though the voter guides listed five or six issues. Seems he is willfully ignoring church teaching on the paramount issue of the sanctity of life).

Our black brothers and sisters were very receptive to the literature! Philly is FILLED with Churches -- you should see the yellow page section on them. We really could have used at least 100 more volunteers.

Sunday afternoon - 6:00: Radner PA: Once again, a gazillion phone calls. People are starting to threaten to vote for Kerry if they recieve one more call. I'm starting to threaten to vote for Kerry if I have to call another person! LOL

6:00 As we left I just had to talk to this beautiful dark skinned young woman (hispanic? Indian? I don't know) before leaving the Radner headquarters -- I got her e-mail address. ;-)

I met one NYer at the Radnor head quarters, but they didn't come as a result of my post.

There were plenty of NJ and NY volunteers. I'm not sure if there were many FREEPERS.

>>>That statement will leave you with egg on your face as I know of six from New York who have been there since Friday but cannot say it was the result of your gazallion posts.

Well, I hope I have egg on my face or I've wasted a ton of time on FR trying to get people to PA and OH. (BTW, I didn't organize this at all -- I was a volunteer myself.)

Sorry if you took my comment incorrectly, didn't mean to imply you did the canvassing looking for chicks.

Please accept my apology, didn't mean it that way.

Call in sick Mon & Tues and go help make calls! (Most people I know dread calling and would rather go door to door.)

Come on folks, we all have to make an effort to get the vote out. Sitting here and agonizing over the polls isn't going to get us very far. WE have to do all we can to help gotv.

I'm in Ca and have been going down to our local rep headquarters since September. In the past 3 weeks, I've been going down every day, worked the registration table at the mall a few times, walked 3 precincts, have made phone calls a few times when at headquarters.

A few hours is nothing compared to having to live with a Kerry presidency for at least 4 years.

The president needs your help.

My Mom went to church on Saturday in Scranton --- one flier on her windshield, one on her door handle.

My Dad went to a different church on Sunday morning -- same thing with the fliers.

The pro-lifers are out in full force at area masses!

Not sure if church employees or church volunteers were doing the fliers.... or if an outside group was putting them out.

You guys really crack me up. A new guy just tries to get into the flow and you torch him a new orifice. Four years ago there was dicussion and opinion on FreeRepublic. Now its just a chatroom echo chamber. What a waste of time. The only thing I like is that there are some really humorous things that go on like the initiation of this poor virgin poster.

Where would we be now if Abraham Lincoln had taken such a stand on slavery?

Lincoln did take such a stand on slavery. His position in 1860 was to keep slavery contained where it would be put on a path to "ultimate extinction". The Civil War changed things, but even then his position was to preserve the union and if that could be done at the expense of allowing slavery to continue in the slave states, he would have taken it. It was until the last year of the war that he finally took a stand against slavery everywhere.

Still, Lincoln had his opponent's pegged pretty well. What made Lincoln unpopular was not that he stood for making slavery illegal, but that he was uncompromising in calling slavery evil. That was something that the South could not abide by. Read Lincoln's Cooper Union speech delivered in 1860 - which played a major role in getting him the Republican nomination and ultimately, the Presidency.

From the minute you arrive in PA you can tell you are in a battle ground state. It's as if every mile or so on every road there are Bush or Kerry yard signs.

Pro-life billboards are all over the place. So are pro-vote billboards (not sure which side put them up).

Quite a few out of state activists (you can tell by bumper stickers and license plates).

Hotels were booked solid Saturday night in Allentown.

In Philly, near the black churches, every freaking telephone pole had Kerry/Edwards signs attached.

Everyone near Pa get out tomorrow and help. ive been making people watch Stolen Honor... it helps make up their mind and motivates those that werent. Have to work? Make calls tomorrow nite, go see neighbors.
As for those Kerryites knocking on doors,(theyve been to my house) if you ask them even the most benign question, such as tell me why you support Kerry, they beat a hasty retreat. I was laughing at the reactions I got. They dont have a clue.

I am sorry you had fewer people than the commies. Rs are so restrained... Anyway, I am running a call center on Tuesday and perhaps many other FReepers are active in their local areas. Great work, 1stFreedom!

Anyway, I am running a call center on Tuesday and perhaps many other FReepers are active in their local areas.

My wife and I spent a few hours Sunday afternoon working the phones in Pinellas County, Florida. It was a lot of fun, and we could sense a lot of intensity in the voters we contacted about making the effort to vote this time.

I ran up on at least two who, although they were on the Republican calling list, were still wrestling with their decisions. Both conversations turned into heart-to-heart discussions about what really matters in this election and how President Bush is the only logical choice to continue the fight we all know we must continue against terrorism. I felt good to help them make up their minds, and both committed to vote for Bush.

Between the two of us, we covered at least 120 calls in the time we had available, while our 14-year-old son went door to door with a precinct walk team.

Every VOTE counts, and every VOLUNTEER counts! Even if you have just a couple of hours to spare, get to a Republican office and lend a hand Monday and Tuesday. The votes you stir up may make the difference...

I know you're on the ground and I'm not...but one of the reasons Dean lost in Iowa was because MoveOn and the other 527s had lots of volunteers but were terribly unorganized, and in the Ohio GOTV thread posted here today, Ohioans report the same thing: MoveOn has plenty of people, but they can't find their way around the neighborhoods and are completely disorganized.

So, maybe the same thing is happening in PA?

There will be time to FREEP on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, there will likely be reasons to freep on Wednesday--street freeping, that is, even if the Prez wins 350 EVs.

The DNC pays their "volunteers". Hard for the GOP to go up against cold hard cash, I suppose.

Yeah, but if they have to pay for ground game and we don't, what does that indicate about motivation?

Thank you for your efforts. This might cheer you up. It is a GOP sign waving at Heinz field before the Steelers beat the New England Patriots. Note: I personally watched a Kerry thug punch the sign out of the hands of the lady on the far left. I did not get a picture of that. Of course the girlie man went after the woman instead of one the guys.
