Activism Thread ^ | November 1, 2004 | floriduh voter

Posted on 11/01/2004 8:09:34 AM PST by floriduh voter

Good morning, freepers. As you may already know, this is where we place links to other Terri threads at Free Republic and other breaking news about Terri Schindler-Schiavo.

In addition, this is a place to meet and plan ways to use grassroots activism to help Terri's Fight.

If you are a newbie to Terri's Fight, I urge you to visit http://www.terrisfight.org where you can subscribe to their newsletter, can get up to speed on the court cases and the very long struggle.

As far as what can Free Republic do for Terri's Fight, in the November Dailies Thread (here), please consider joining us.

The pay isn't very good lol but it is rewarding to help Terri nonetheless. Terri's life has as much value as anyone else's. The right to die movement needs a counter-balance. That freepers, is where we come in. TO JOIN TERRI'S FREEPERS, I would ask that newbies and old guard Terri freepers do a post to join us under our new name: TERRI'S FREEPERS.

My understanding from what the Schindlers said on Larry King Live and elsewhere is that they made Michael an offer that would fully remove him from any legal / financial obligations to Terri if he would only give them custody. This he refused.

Schiavo entered into a medical malpractice suit for nearly 20 million on his and Terri's behalf. He, his lawyer and his medical expert claimed that Terri had a life expectancy of 50+ years (putting her expected aging to about 78) and therefore, a large amount was required to provide necessary medical care, rehabilitation and living needs.

At the outcome of the medmal, Terri and her husband were collectively awarded around 1.6 mil in November of 1992. A considerable drop off from 20 mil.

Within a few months or collecting, Schiavo placed a DNR order on her chart and instructed doctors at the nursing home in which she was confined to not treat a urinary tract infection. He would later admit in court, under oath, that he knew doing so would cause sepsis and, eventually, her death.

He also said - under oath - in 2000 that is was his mother's death that allowed him to understand the need to let go of Terri. However, his mother died some years later than the 1993 incident.

Schiavo is/was on the board of Jerger-Centonze Insurance, but does not have an insurance license in the state of Florida.

It is because of these things that many consider money to have been a primary motivation.

As of some time last year and according to Schiavo and his attorney, there is less than $50k in Terri's medical fund. Terri's medical fund was intended and earmarked for her rehabilitation, yet the better part of it has been spent on 'right to die' attorney, George Felos in pursuit of the removal of her assisted nutrition and hydration.

Under Florida Statutes, an incapacitated person retains the right to prudent financial management of their property. What has occurred is a violation of those guardianship laws.

Taking away the bigger picture of attempts to dehydrate and starve Terri Schiavo to death for only a moment, there has been gross mismanagement of her property as it relates to the statutes.

No one can possibly know for certain if there are any other monies involved, but George Felos did tell local newspaper St Pete Times in 2001 that he intended to write another book - this one about his experiences in the Schiavo case. He is also accepting speaking engagements directly related to the case at 10 and 15k a shot. This cannot be done without breaching the attorney-client privilege ethic unless he's been given permission by his client.

This same attorney was Chairman of the Board of the very Hospice Terri Schiavo was illegitmately confined to some four years ago and at the time of her confinement. This same hospice is a non-profit corporation that sees somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,800 patients a year but claimed a GP of just over $72 million dollars last year alone.

This same attorney has (on his own admission) ties to the Hemlock Society of North American (now called Choices in Dying) and garnered the support of the ACLU in the case of Schiavo v. Bush.

Though it may be virtually impossible to completely and utterly prove that money is changing hands, my gut tells me that it is.

People don't wrong, wrong and wrong again free of charge.

I know Judges and lawyers can lie like that. They lie as easily as we tell the truth. But as many times as I have myself encountered it, I find it amazing.

Pryers for Terri and her family.

ANOTHER CASE BUT DIFFERENT SCENARIO IN ORLANDO, FL. The husband has a Living Will, the wife is his Health Care Surrogate who by law gets to decide his fate regardless of the Living Will. The hospital he's at wants to end his life but the wife says "no, he is happy and enjoying his life." HOSPITAL V. WIFE and a FLORIDA JUDGE GETS TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION.

Please visit http://www.tbo.com for this Saturday article.

(I'm on the move this morning but wanted to alert Terri's Freepers that there's a new article today.) FV

Please Post Birthday Greetings for Terri Schiavo. -- http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1283113/posts

THANKS to all who have posted their greetings. I am acknowledging them privately to free up the thread. If you note that a possibly interested freeper hasn't posted, freepmail them the address or ping them.

Continuing to pray for Terri & her family. Also for all who care so much about her, that we can work for good on her behalf.

May Terri soon be free like any other ordinary American to enjoy this beautiful Florida weather and the softness of a kitten -- as she is able to (see photos on birthday thread).

Note: on your posts, you can leave the "To:" field blank -- that way, it's just your note to Terri.

This is not good to do, though, if you are referencing or responding to a particular post and want others to see it.

I love this place.

ooohh, correction, it *does* show what post I'm responding to now. Good!

This is important because, if I wanted to be able to print only a particular response off a thread, it must have a reply to it ... then I can hit "show replies", and it will show that initial post.

Hospice 'Exit Protocol' in Schiavo case
by Pete Vere

The Interim Oct 2004

Right-to-life and disability advocates were shocked this past September, as a new document surfaced in the battle to save Terri Schindler-Schiavo from her husband and the Florida state judiciary. The reported document appears on "Hospice of the Florida Suncoast" stationary under the title, "Exit Protocol." It lays out, in chilling detail, the anticipated physical and medical deterioration Terri would suffer should her husband succeed in having her feeding tube removed.

Along with his attorney George Felos, Michael Schiavo - Terri's husband - alleges that Terri is in a persistently vegetative state. Subsequently, he continues to claim in both the courts and the popular media that Terri would feel no pain should her feeding tube be removed. Michael is a nurse by profession.

Cheryl Ford is also a registered nurse. She has spent the past few years assisting Bob and Mary Schindler in the battle to save their daughter from starvation and dehydration. At the invitation of the Schindlers, Cheryl recently completed a comprehensive review of Terri's medical records.

During this review, she discovered the so-called Exit Protocol, dated April 19, 2001.

The document admits that, "Upon discontinuation of enteral feeding, the following signs/symptoms may or may not occur. … pain/discomfort." The document then details the numerous symptoms of pain and discomfort that hospice staff should anticipate.

These symptoms include the complete breakdown of Terri's skin and internal organs, followed by slow asphyxiation as bodily fluids thicken, and in the final stages before death, muscle spasms and bodily seizures. At each stage of the degeneration, the protocol prescribes different forms of medication to deal with the symptoms.

Father Robert Johansen is a young Catholic priest and a popular cultural and religious commentator among his generation of Catholics in America. Over the past year, he has grown close to the Schindler family and often relieves Monsignor Malanowski, an elderly priest who serves as the family's chaplain. In bringing the so-called Exit Protocol to the attention of The Interim, Johansen was visibly horrified by the protocol's contents.

"George Felos, Michael Schiavo and all the other advocates of feeding-tube removal have been saying repeatedly that dying by denial of nutrition and hydration is 'peaceful' and 'painless,'" Johansen observed. "They've both said so in interviews and press conferences, such as on Larry King Live. So if dying by denial of nutrition and hydration is, as Michael said, 'painless and probably the most natural way to die,' then why is medication needed for pain and discomfort?"

Johansen also takes issue with the purpose behind the various medications prescribed. "Most of the 'treatments' described in this Exit Protocol are in fact not directed at easing the patient's true condition," he stated in a follow-up e-mail to The Interim, "but in masking the symptoms of dying by starvation and dehydration. These treatments are designed to create the appearance of a peaceful slipping away," when nothing of the sort is happening.

The medications hide the fact that the patient undergoes a lengthy and painful deterioration, in which his/her body wastes away cruelly. Johansen implores readers to remember this the next time they hear or read someone say that Terri should be "allowed to die."

Do you think it may have been a random port scan? If you have a 'soft' firewall, it probably created a log entry. If you feel like freep-mailing me what you picked up, I may be able to figure out what happened.

I did find Sago Networks in Tampa. They appear to be a dedicated hosting service, but also provide point-to-point connectivity for business. http://www.sagonet.com. I didn't see that they provide any consumer-level ISP service, but I may have missed something.

If you have the time and inclination, you may want to go to http://housecall.antivirus.com. That is a free scanner for malicious files from Trend Micro and it can, oftentimes, pick up things regular virus software cannot. It's also free.

This has happened to me as well. I have found that a router is safer than a soft firewall. Linksys makes a very good 4-port router and the price is right.
