Activism Thread ^ | November 1, 2004 | floriduh voter

Good morning, freepers. As you may already know, this is where we place links to other Terri threads at Free Republic and other breaking news about Terri Schindler-Schiavo.

In addition, this is a place to meet and plan ways to use grassroots activism to help Terri's Fight.

If you are a newbie to Terri's Fight, I urge you to visit http://www.terrisfight.org where you can subscribe to their newsletter, can get up to speed on the court cases and the very long struggle.

As far as what can Free Republic do for Terri's Fight, in the November Dailies Thread (here), please consider joining us.

The pay isn't very good lol but it is rewarding to help Terri nonetheless. Terri's life has as much value as anyone else's. The right to die movement needs a counter-balance. That freepers, is where we come in. TO JOIN TERRI'S FREEPERS, I would ask that newbies and old guard Terri freepers do a post to join us under our new name: TERRI'S FREEPERS.

Note cards -- blank inside -- with that lovely image of Terri and her mom -- could be used for Christmas cards and after.

Note cards -- blank inside -- with those black and white animal sketches Terri made years ago that her family found last year.

Cards would have the Terri's fight info on the back. Proceeds go to Terri's fight.

See if someone will donate the printing services for Terri, or we chip in to make it happen. I'm short on time and ideas and ability, but can chip in my little "loaves and fishes" bit, as others might also.

Home for the holidays.

Hi, I have a bug and I'm waiting to get better so I can come back to free republic. Here's something from Friar Johansen who came down last year...

This month's issue of "Catholic World Report," features "The Struggle to Save Terri" by CURE advisor Fr. Rob Johansen as the cover story. As Fr. Johansen writes on Thrown Back:

"In this article, I relate some of the personal experiences of the Schindler family, and my own experiences in helping them, in their efforts to save Terri's life. I describe the circumstances of how I came to be involved in her case, and my reactions to the inhuman treatment to which she is subjected, such as her husband Michael's denial of a priest's visits:

"I had never heard of a patient being denied pastoral care before. I can't even imagine the kind of hardness of heart required to take such a position. Even condemned criminals are given access to clergy! But Terri Schiavo, who was guilty of no crime, was denied something we commonly provide to the most heinous of criminals. It seemed to me that Judge Greer had decided that Terri was so sub-human that she is could be denied even spiritual comfort and consolation. I wrote at the time:

"As a priest, I cannot imagine being in Msgr. Malanowski's position. I simply could not stand for such interference with my ministry. I would be inclined to seek every means possible to disobey the order and visit Terri. An unjust law is no law at all. Similarly, a capricious, inhuman, unjust and gratuitous judge's order is no order at all.

"There is a long standing tradition in the Church of defying Caesar when he trespasses beyond his rightful authority. There is a well-established tradition of resisting Caesar when he attempts to deprive the Church of her legitimate prerogatives. And so, I reiterate the suggestion I made a couple of weeks ago: It is time to consider civil disobedience.

"It seemed to me that this deprivation of Terri's right to spiritual care was the final indignity. If this wasn't sufficient motivation to condemn Terri's treatment and mobilize opposition, nothing would be."

Yes, Father Murphy was backed over by a car, just like George Felos' father was (by his mother). Some people in Florida doesn't know how to drive, ya know, look both ways, etc.?

You're welcome. Here's a song written about Terri a year ago. I heard it a year ago at the vigil after Terri's Law was signed by Jeb.

What a nice picture of Terri's picture ... have the Schindlers ever considered having that on a billboard?

Sorry to hear you're under the weather, and I hope you feel better soon. Keep up the chicken soup, and rest well.

Please, God our Father, continue to watch over Terri and her family. Give her compassionate caregivers day and night. When we are at our human limits, we know You are there to accomplish what we cannot. You are Terri's best advocate, and we give praise to You alone. Give us good rest tonight, and help fv and others to feel better. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Did Governor Bush put in the appeal to the Supreme Court? He had until today (11-29), didn’t he? I checked the news and haven’t seen anything. Does anyone know if the appeal was filed?

TIA

Governor to take Schiavo case to U.S. High Court

October 23 , 2004
Tampa Tribune
By David Sommer

CLEARWATER - Both Gov. Jeb Bush and Terri Schiavo's parents will pursue appeals aimed at keeping the brain-damaged woman alive, their attorneys said Friday after the second in a pair of courtroom defeats.
Bush will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to restore the balance of power between Florida's judicial branch and the legislative and executive branches, attorney Ken Connor said.

``This case is not only about Terri Schiavo, but also about the role of the courts and the Legislature and the governor,'' he said.

``Who is going to be the chief architect of policy in this state?'' Connor asked. ``The largely unelected judiciary or the elected branches with the most accountability?''

Also Friday, a day after Florida's highest court refused to revisit the constitutionality of a measure dubbed ``Terri's Law'' that allowed Bush to intervene in what had been a family dispute, Bush asked the Florida Supreme Court to block Michael Schiavo from removing his wife's feeding tube while the U.S. Supreme Court is asked to review the case.

Connor said he did that in response to a letter Schiavo attorney George Felos sent to a local judge stating his client intended to remove the feeding tube as early as Friday.

The recipient of that letter, Circuit Judge George Greer, issued his own stay Friday without being asked.

Greer ordered Schiavo not to touch the feeding tube until midnight Dec. 6. He said he did so to allow the Schindlers time to appeal another order Greer issued Friday denying them a new trial regarding their daughter's wishes.

Bob Schindler said he and his wife, Mary, will ask the 2nd District Court of Appeal to allow them to present evidence that a March pronouncement by Pope John Paul II would have changed their daughter's mind - if indeed she did not want to be kept alive in her condition - about being kept alive as she is.

Felos said Greer gave the Schindlers too much time.

``Delaying this for another seven weeks serves no constructive purpose whatsoever,'' Felos said. ``Every credible issue in this case has been gone over again and again.''

The Schindlers and their son-in-law have been locked in a bitter legal dispute over Terri Schiavo's wishes.

Michael Schiavo contends his wife made statements prior to her January 1990 heart failure, at age 26, indicating she would never want to be kept alive by artificial means.

Doctors hired by Michael Schiavo say his wife is in a persistent vegetative state after her brain was destroyed by a lack of oxygen. She cannot swallow and can only be kept alive with the help of a feeding tube inserted into her stomach, Schiavo's doctors say.

The Schindlers contend their daughter reacts to them and could improve with therapy. Their doctors say she could learn to swallow and might not need the feeding tube.

After a January 2000 trial, Greer ruled Terri Schiavo would not want to be kept alive with no hope of improvement. After a second trial, in 2002, he ruled credible medical evidence shows Terri Schiavo will never improve or learn to swallow.

Terri Schiavo's feeding tube was removed twice with Greer's permission, only to be reinserted. In October 2003, after the tube was removed the second time, Bush ordered that feeding resume after the Legislature passed the measure dubbed Terri's Law.

Last Month, the Florida Supreme Court unanimously affirmed a lower court finding that Terri's Law is unconstitutional for several reasons. The high court specifically cited the separation of powers doctrine that bars lawmakers from making laws to change court rulings.

Bush contends he should have been allowed his own trial on Terri Schiavo's wishes and her husband's possible motives for wanting her feeding tube removed. Michael Schiavo is engaged to another woman, has fathered two children with her, and has refused requests from the Schindlers to divorce their daughter and relinquish guardianship.

The Schindlers repeatedly have asked their church to intervene.

In March, after a Vatican congress on how to treat people in a persistent vegetative state, the pope said such people always should be provided nourishment. To do otherwise would be an act of euthanasia and contrary to church teaching, he said. The pope made no mention of Terri Schiavo.

In his ruling Friday denying the Schindlers a new trial, Greer cited an opinion from the 2nd District Court of Appeal stating Terri Schiavo ``was raised in the Catholic faith, but did not regularly attend Mass or have a religious advisor who could assist the court in weighing her religious attitude about life support.''

Local Talk Show Host Mark Larson is bashing Terri supporters again today. I'm convinced that Mark Larson is a friend of Judge Greer and he's trying to help promote Terri's starvation for his buddy Greer. They are both tied to the real estate business.

I don't know if Mark Larson archives his radio show but he's working for Greer, in my opinion, you know SPREADING PROPAGANDA on a conservative radio station 1040 talk radio, wwba.
