Two-party system must go
Auburn Plainsman ^ | October 28, 2004 | Michael Thompson

Posted on 11/01/2004 9:40:20 PM PST by TBP

Jay Leno said it best. The comedian with the unusually large chin quiped, "Its amazing that we live in a country that has 50 contestants for Miss America, but only two for president."

We are five days away from the Nov. 2 Presidential Election, and the two choices for commander-in-chief we are realistically left with have reached the political equivalent of the 12th round of a boxing match.

As of yet, neither President George W. Bush nor challenger John F. Kerry have delievered a knock out blow, leading one to suspect the judges to decide the winner.

The judges of course being, you, the American voter. Currently, polls ranging from CNN/USA Today/Gallup to Reuters/Zogby show Bush with a small, statistical lead, by 3 percent or 5 percent.

Around Auburn, no official poll has been conducted, but I'd wager from 'W-The President' stickers on cars, compared to 'Kerry/Edwards' stickers, students support the reelection of President Bush by 3-to-1 margin.

When talking to Kerry supporters, one is confronted with nearly the same rhetoric being espoused each time, the anyone but Bush line.

With all of Kerry's faults, inconsistencies, out right lies and complete lack of integrity to the point that he will say anything to be elected, Democrats still have bet the house on the Massachusetts' most liberal senator.

Yet Bush supporters are equal in their inability to sort fact from fiction, as the party of limited goverment- the Republicans- have amassed a $450 billion budget deficit, a war with Iraq that is still not over and costing billions each month to maintain and have failed to do anything to protect America's borders since 9-11.

When people call Bush a conservative, I have to restrain myself from laughing.

If he embodies 21st century conservatism, then any hope of ever curbing the growth of the Federal Government under a Republican president are gone.

No, Bush and Kerry are one of the same. This election may be exciting, but it will do nothing to cease the capsizing of the American republic into the sea of socialism we are vastly sinking into.

A Kerry election will only speed the process along further, but Bush's reelection will not stall the process.

Look at the Medicare prescription-drug plan he signed into law.

As Leno said though, we are left with only two choices.

I don't believe that. If a population of 290 million can only produce these two candidates, we are in serious jeopardy.

It also serves to disprove Darwin's theory of evolution, as we have gone from George Washington to these gentlemen.

That is why I will cast my ballot for Michael Peroutka, the Constitution Party's candidate for president.

The Constitution Party believes in adhering to the Constitution, something Bush and Kerry have sworn to do, but failed to remember.

Peroutka and company believe in limited government and placing troops where they belong, protecting the U.S. border.

He is against abortion and gay marriage, wishes to deport illegal immigrants and strongly supports national sovereignty, something Kerry has no idea about.

He is a true conservative and embodies many of the same ideals young Republicans possess here at Auburn and elsewhere.

Consider him when you visit the polls on Nov. 2, for Peroutka is one of the few candidates who serve as a lifeboat for those fearful of the socialist waters the Republican Party are taking conservatives for a swim in.

Whether or not one agrees with this writer's choice of candidates, he brings an interesting perspective and he does have a point when he notes the increasing sameness of the two major parties. Third parties have an important role to play in representing voters the two major parties have abandoned.

Under W, domestic discretionary spending has increased at a faster rate than under Klintoon. Conservatives should be alarmed by this.

The two candidates could hardly be more diverse.

One is an admitted war criminal,
the other is a patriot.

Great! We can see how well government works when you have to make coalitions with people who believe entirely different than you to get anything accomplished. We can be like all the "democracies" that never pass any law that matters.

The dems can splinter into 2-3 parties, that way liberals will have plenty of choices.

"Two-party system must go"

I agree! What the heck do we need the Democrats for, anyway? The Constitution guarantees "a Republican form of government"—I say we take that literally!

Upon President Bush winning re-election today, the Republicans have just 4 more years to keep my vote. This means making dedicated efforts towards tax reform, tort reform and all the other conservative things that President Bush said he'd do in his 2001-2005 administration. If they fail, even after having Senate/White House/House of Rep for 4 years, they'll never get my vote again. It'll be Constitution Party or bust.

The Democratic Party, as Rush states, is dying. It has about 20 years left as a major party before it goes the way of the Whigs. The Republican Party will dominate for about the next 30-40 years, much the way the Democrats did (House/Senate) in the 4-5 decades after the FDR era until 1994 elections.

"That is why I will cast my ballot for Michael Peroutka, the Constitution Party's candidate for president."

The author disparages Kerry and President Bush and then touts that guy as a better choice? Huh. All you third-party-candidate voters feel free to marginalize yourselves. You offer the winners NOTHING and then wonder why they pay you no attention. You Libertarian Party (those of you who really are Libertarians and not shills for the drug cartels) and Constitution Party guys would do much better reforming the Republican Party from the inside (look how successful the Socialists were with the Democrat Party).

Two contestetants much better than 50 (well, if the Media did what it was supposed to do and vet each candidate evenly instead of jut attacking the President and Airbrushing Kerry).

I predict a squeaker:

Peroutka 39.0% 256 EV
Kerry 38.5% 248 EV
Bush 20.3% 34 EV
Nader 1.5% 0 EV
Other 0.6% 0 EV
TBP's sink 0.1% 0 EV

Historically it's been hard for third parties to get anywhere. If a party has a good idea, one of the other parties will co-opt it (or both will.) For example, smaller government, less regulation, etc., have been co-opted from the libertarians by the GOP whereas the Democrats co-opted the idea of more spending, more regulation, etc., from the socialists.

Our pool of potential candidates has been greatly diminished by the nasty politics over the past 12 years. Would-be politicians, who have integrity and real heart, do not really want to venture into the fray, dragging their family in with them. The environment is so ugly, and the attacks are so personalthese days, the outstanding leaders in our country prefer to lead in ways other than political. Pathetic situation for our country, isn't it?

We may be poised to have a real test of the "two" party system in Alabama in '06.

Speculation continues to swirl that Roy Moore will run for Governor on the Constitution party ticket. Then we'll see whether we are ready for any party other than the Republicans and Democrats (I'm betting not).

If a party has a good idea, one of the other parties will co-opt it (or both will.)

That would be the best possible outcome. But so far, the Republicans show little or no inclination to adopt the Constitution Party/Libertarian notion of minimalist government. Instead, discretionary domestic spending goes up by a faster rate tean during the Klintoon administration. We get the biggest entitlement program in almost 40 years. We get increasing Federalization of education and agriculture, at a massive cost. We get a de facto amnesty for illegal aliens. We get the unconstitutionally restrictive McCain-Feingold "campaign finance reform" bill. We get a Patriot Act which, while containing many worthwhile porvisions such as greater information sharing, contains many that are dangerous in teh wrong hands. Imagine what Hitlery would do with the sneakl and peek provision, the power to detain anyone as an "enemy combatant" and other powers. That could be the end of liberty in this country.

If the Repoublicans would show some movement towards smaller, cheaper, less restrictive, less intrusive government, I think many of us would still be in the Republican tent. But working outside the tent seems like the only way to force them to do so right now.
