Tokyo expatriates watching and waiting

Posted: 1:11 a.m. From Atika Shubert, CNN Correspondent, in Tokyo, Japan

Republicans Abroad in Japan gathered at the Hobgoblin, a Tokyo watering hole, to watch the results displayed on flatscreen TVs. Some viewers came equipped with laptop computers to track the vote count in specific states. Democrats Abroad in Japan gathered at private homes to monitor the results.

Both organizations said they had record numbers of Americans in Japan registering to vote in the 2004 elections. The Tokyo American Club tuned their television sets to CNN's live election coverage, attracting a bipartisan crowd of members. As the counting dragged on, however, viewers grew increasingly anxious.

"It's a real nailbiter. I can't sit still to watch!" one expatriate said as she left the club.

Seriously, how should I go about posting pictures. Do I need to link to them on another site, or is there way to upload them here. Give me some pointers.

You'll have to use a web host for your pics and then link using

< img src="web address" > for it to display.

Here's the pics I promised. In link form, not as embedded images. Hope you don't mind. If you know a quick way of building the html to post lots of pictures from another web site please let me know.

I've spent 15 of the last 21 years on and off stationed in Japan as a Marine, and later a USN civilian. I've been in Guam the past year. I've only been to that American Club once, a AmexCard exec took me there for lunch, I preferred going to the New Sanno (and Old Sanno in the 70's). My oldest just graduated in '02 from Sophia and lives in Naka Meguro, working for Waratte Iitomo in Shinjuku. On one tour at Yokosuka, I attended a "hail and farewell". The honored guest, who had just spent a 3 year tour in Japan, was chomping on a stick of yaki-tori, asking, "Hey, this stuff's pretty good, what do you call it?". He'd never tried it before. The guy and his family never went anywhere, they stayed on the base for all their free time except for one trip to the Daibutsu in Kamakura, what a waste. Here in Guam the Tumon area is set up for Japanese tourists, so it feels just like you're in Yokohama on Friday nights. Semper Fidelis.

So nice to hear from you. Last year we got together for Thanksgiving at Gator Navy's (think I mentioned it) and had a great time. I wanted to attend this event but had to work. In retrospect, the way it went, I'm glad I "watched" it alone on FR. I do recognize somone in the photos, though, and am glad to see the person.

Ronin, it would be lots of fun to go to your shop. How about a Friday evening in the near future?

Sounds great to me! Let's do it. Since it is a bit too late to get something going for tonight, let's make it for two weeks from now to give everyone a chance to get on board.

Friday or any day of the weekend is fine. We are not normally open on Sundays, but if that is preferred, I can set up a special schedule.

(It's good to be the boss.)
