Islamabad, Nov 3 (UNI) Security agencies have arrested two suspected al-Qaeda militants including a foreign national in the country's southwestern city of Quetta.

''The suspects include an Iraqi national, identified as Khaled,'' The Dawn quoted unnamed security officials as saying.

The newspaper said nationality of the other suspect could not be ascertained. Officials said that security personnel had raided a house on Monday night in Satellite Town area.

The suspects, who offered no resistance at the time of arrest, were interrogated for their alleged links with al-Qaeda.

The latest arrests in Quetta came a little over a month after the killing of Amjad Farooqi, one of the 20 most wanted terrorists, in a shootout with the security forces in Pakistani city of Nawaz Shah.

Farooqi, who was one of the masterminds of the two assassination bids on President Pervez Musharraf in December last year, had close links with al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and other members of the terrorist network.

A key ally of the United States in the ongoing war against terror, Pakistan has so far arrested and handed over more than 550 suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban fugitives to the US.

Two Bulgarians have been arrested in Sofia as suspects to have been sending anonymous SMS messages reportedly acting on behalf of al-Qaeda terror network.

The two young men, aged 27 and 29, came in the focus of Bulgaria's specialized unit on fight against organized crime when two months ago several mobile subscribers received peculiar SMS messages from an unknown sender offering them USD 5,000 to bomb certain public buildings in capital Sofia.

The offer, written in different languages, said also they would receive another sum of that, should the operation is successful.

The SMS receivers were threatened with death, unless they cooperated.

Bulgarian police said that after being questioned, the two men had confessed to have acted on hooligan motives and their actions incurred no real threat of terrorist acts.

Iraqi, Afghan caught for links with Qaeda

QUETTA: Intelligence agents have arrested an Iraqi national and an Afghan man suspected of having links with Al Qaeda, an official said on Tuesday.

The men were picked up at a bus station in Quetta on Monday, where they were trying to catch a bus to Taftan, a town near the Iranian border, an intelligence official who asked not to be named, said. Both men allegedly carried guns, he said.

The Iraqi was identified as Muhammad Khalid, 38, but the Afghan was not identified.

“The two are being investigated for links with Al Qaeda but they do not appear to be senior figures in the network,” said the official. Officials in Islamabad could not confirm the arrests. “I have no information about the arrests,” Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said.
