PARIS -- European allies alienated by President Bush's first four years in power offered Wednesday to let bygones be bygones, saying they want to work with the new administration and seeking, right from Day 1, to get the new White House to listen more to overseas opinion.
French President Jacques Chirac, in a congratulatory letter, said he hoped Bush's second term "will be the occasion for strengthening the French-American friendship."
"We will be unable to find satisfying responses to the numerous challenges that confront us today without a close trans-Atlantic partnership," wrote Chirac. He addressed the letter to "Dear George."
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who also clashed with Bush over Iraq, wrote the president a congratulatory letter expressing "great expectations" for renewed cooperation.
"The world stands before great challenges at the beginning of your second term: international terrorism, the danger of weapons of mass destruction, regional crises -- but also poverty, climate change and epidemics threaten our security and stability," Schroeder wrote. "These challenges can only be mastered together."
Another critic of the Iraq war, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said his government wants "a relationship of efficient, constructive cooperation with the U.S. government and with President Bush, respecting the ideas of each side."
Zapatero, who angered Washington by withdrawing Spanish troops from Iraq, stayed up most of the night to watch as Republican red crept across the U.S. electoral map.

Come to Daddy, you Frenchies ...
I'll be they do!
Notice how it says "first four years in power," not "as President of the United States." Saddam was in power, W was elected.
Memo to Europe: Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.
As Khan Noonian Singh said in Star Trek 2 "Let them eat static!"
Dear Jacques and Gerhard,
Who's your Daddy now???
BCNU,
George W. Bush
Two words for France.
BITE ME!!!
HA!
They are more than welcome to step up to the plate and support the conservative platform. Of course, I doubt that is what they intend.
Losers hoping to still wind, that is their mantra......
Go away losers, now it is our turn to pass some legislation!!!!!!!
"New beginnings" smells a lot like "Fresh Start" to me. And I thought we could only get that from JFnK.
They've been hedging their bets hoping for a Kerry win. Now they know they've got to work with Bush for the next 4 years so we'll see some amazing attitude changes.
Yup. Can we say that the world is a little bit afraid of us now? Get some chap stick: time to pucker up!!
AP = Assorted Putzes.
You know what Jack? After Iraq we're coming for you.
Yup, and I say GTH. Of course, that's why I didn't run for President. I say now that we have conrol we take control!
In looking at this sudden attitude of reaching across the table to Bush I was struck by the thought that these euroweenies really did think they would bring down this President.
I think the Gore/Florida situation really harmed Bush's first term, Gore convinced all of our enemies/allies that Bush was selected not elected. This led to a lack of legitimacy for Bush or at least allowed these countries to treat him as less than legitimate. The onslaught of the 2004 Presidential campaign allowed every slimy Democrat running for office to pile on. These world leaders took this as a cue to not work with our President, treating him despicably.
This election not only erased this perception, it let the entire world know that a majority of the American people have great faith in President Bush and trust his decisions in guiding our country. When you dis our President, you dis the people of the U.S.
Perhaps after a suitable offering of gold and silk, followed by the public genuflection of Schroeder and Chirac in front of W, we can consider moving forward.
ROTFLOL!!! Guess we made our point with all them thar votes folks!! Whoooo Hooooo! The Euroweenies are shaking in their boots. This is way tooooo funny.
Now what was that Kerry was saying about Bush HAVING TO MAKE CONCESSIONS TO OUR ALLIES - looks like it's the other way around to me.
According to Rudi - he went to Europe recently (for Bush). When the weenies complained that Bush needed to be more aware of their issues and their values .. Rudi said he explained to them that they need to see America the same way; being willing to find out what our issues and our values are also. Oh that Bush .. here he is telling the allies - you want out friendship - be a friend first!! Awesome!!
"European allies alienated by President Bush's first four years in power "
Actually, our European "allies" alienated the President. It was their decision to disrespect him.
