The Democratic Party's sharp defeat in the 2004 election has already produced a round of soul searching.
The GOP recaptured the White House and strengthened its hold on Congress with powerful support from churchgoers.
Now some in the party are saying that the Democrats need to reach out to these voters with a faith-based appeal.
"I don't hesitate to stand up in a crowd and express how important faith is in my life. It is important to be able to express that in a way that is believable, and Democrats have to get comfortable doing that," Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., told the Washington Post.
Other Democratic politicians and officials echoed her view.
Congressman Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., a former presidential candidate, told the New York Times that Democrats had failed "to speak to our faith, and to relate to people that we share their faith."
President Bush's faith-based appeal resonated in the South and rural and small town communities across the nation. And his opposition to gay marriage positioned him to take advantage of widespread voter opposition to same-sex unions.
According to CBS News exit polls, only 26 percent of all voters supported the idea of legalized gay and lesbian marriages, while 36 percent opposed any legal recognition of gay and lesbian relationships. Among this latter group, Mr. Bush held a greater than 2-to-1 advantage over Democrat John Kerry.

I think they have already taken up the serpent. Take a look at who the hire. Carville!
Can't put lipstick on a pig.
Democrats are royally screwed
They are prisoners of the Pro Abortion--Gun Grabbin--Homosexual Pushing--Tree Worshipping--Anti Religion --Anti Military-- America is The Cause of All the World Ills --wack jobs that are the basis of the VAST majority of their $$$$$$$$$$$
No way they can shake off that Tar Baby and survive financially
The point isn't that Republicans are Christians, but that Christians are Republican.
I'll see if I can find the survey showing that 90% of church-attending (white) Christians vote Republican. Ann Coulter cited it in a column, but I'm not sure where to find it on line. If the Dems become practicing Christians, either their personal politics, or the platform of their party, will necessarily change.
I think lots of Americans like me resent the Dems' invocation of religion.
In the last month or two of the campaign, John Kerry liked to say(when it was opportune), "Faith without works is dead." For the Dems, there are no works. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who votes Democrat today is faith-dead and brain-dead.
As a Christian, I believe it is impossible to rationalize voting for a party who carries the banner for abortion on demand and gay marriage.
The Democrat party cannot become something it's not. If we could keep them out of black churches, the party would dissolve altogether.
I hear Wal-Mart is having a special on religion starting on the day after Thanksgiving. I recommend that all liberals get there early before it's all gone.
Get religion? Liberal democrats just don't and won't.
P.S. In a related topic: Does anyone think Alan Alda will be able to pull off a believable Republican president on The West Wing?
They seem to miss the point when suggesting they try a faith-based appeal when it includes a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, etc. baseline message. They just dont get it. They would have to alienate their various radical constituencies. Lets help them drive their left-wingers to the Green Party. I may join the Green Party for a few years and work to help them grow. Divide and conquer.
You read my thoughts. Where do they think they are going to "get" religion? Uh.
Are these the people who fight prayer in schools at every turn?
Words from the same Dodd who back the Communists in South American at every turn. What a scumbag.
I'm extremely inclined to doubt that figure. If 90% of white, church going people voted Republican as you say, I don't think there would be but a handful of Democrats in the house, no senators, and the president would have won the election with numbers in the high 60's to low 70's.
They already have religion, what they need is the Lord and his Commandments that they want taken out of our society.
