F-16 Fighter Fires At School In New Jersey

Incident Happened On Training Mission

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. -- A National Guard F-16 fighter jet on a nighttime training mission Wednesday fired 25 rounds of ammunition that tore through an intermediate school. No one was injured.

The military is investigating the incident that damaged Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School shortly after 11 p.m. Police were called to the area when a custodian heard what sounded like someone running across the roof of the school. The custodian was the only person in the school at the time.

Police Chief Mark Siino on Thursday said police officers noticed punctures in the roof. Ceiling tiles had fallen into classrooms and there were scratch marks in the asphalt outside the building. The 2-inch long bullets are made of lead and do not explode, said Col. Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard.
It was unclear why the shots were fired, Webster said.

I should add that you normally need to have the gun selected for the gun to fire. And if you've selected the gun, you probably aren't lasing anything.

Further evidence of the safety of home schooling.

Au contraire -- it looks like them extra-dangerous fundamentalist evangelistic Bush-voting Home-schoolers have got themselves an Air Force now.... ;-)

You ever try and pull the trigger for a quarter of a second?

Darned hard to do.

Did the pilot go to the school and wanted payback??

Bet there will be calls to close the place down.

My prediction is that that range is already shut down -- and that the last firing run has been made on it.

I'm amazed that complaints over the noise of Vulcans firing overhead (sounds like a very loud foghorn) have not already caused the range to be closed.

----------

Unless there is some sort of arming system fault found, that pilot is toast...

"I don't think we have enough information about it for even the experts here at FR to come to any conclusion."

Agreed. . .but that never stopped us before. . .so why would it now!

HA!

25 rounds from a Vulcan cannon is milliseconds in time.

A shorter time than a human could press and release a trigger.

True, but like I said, the same switchology has been in place since I first flew the jet in the early 90's. I honestly have never heard of anyone accidently shooting the gun while lasing a target.

Someone had to be the first.

It just seems to me that it was an accident waiting to happen.

USAF shooting up a school ....

What are the chances Robert Fisk (a journalist who Osama considers "fair") is all over this like white on rice?

My reference point is seriously outdated - but, I don't think they make a DU round for the 20mm?

The Navy used a 20mm DU round in the ship-20 mm CIWS, though are now using the MK149 tungsten-based round; incoming sea skimmer missiles are unlikely to be heavily armored. The USMC has DU 20mm rounds for the 20mm armament of their AH-1 *Huey Cobra* helicopter gunships, though 25mm helicopter armament may replace it.

The USAF may have DU rounds for the M61 cannon aboard the F16, particularly for the F16 versions used in the CAS role. But it's far more likely they were loaded with PGU-27A/B PGU-30A TP-T *blue nose* training ammunition. Which still leaves a ¾-inch hole....

Like every other fighter, about 95% of everything we do in that jet is an accident waiting to happen ;).

Schools are usually unoccupied at 23:00 hours, and during daylight hours, anyone smart enough to qualify to pilot an F-16 could probably recognize a school-even from 7,000 feet.

On the other hand, private dwellings are often occupied all night long. Thus prudent home owners in the area would put their homes on sale , at make an offer prices and move into a motel immediately.

Considering that this firing range has operated since world war 2 with this being the only reportable incidence, I could be persuaded to allow a current home owner to dump their burden on me, if my bid is accepted. Always happy to help out.

Not too hard if you're trying to. More difficult if by accident.
