Maybe the same pilot who launched the missile that shot down TWA 800?

Mike Dupuis, president of the township's Board of Education, said there were no precautions the school district could have taken to prevent such an incident. They should put up a sign that says "F-16-Free Zone"

This man is toast. First, it appears that the MasterArm switch was on, or he could not have fired the gun, even by accident. If it was kicked on while he climbed in the jet, then he failed to perform his basic checklist before getting in the air. Once the MasterArm is on, it is very easy in the F-16 to squeeze the trigger by accident. The profile suggests a nose-up attitude for the aircraft for the rounds to travel the 3.5 miles. If the maneuver was a high-G pull, he might have squeezed off the rounds in pulling back on the stick and having his hand slip a bit.
Anyway, this guy is a goner. Say goodbye flyboy.

There have been several rounds fired on the ranges here at Fort Knox that have gone long and landed near Shepherdsville. Fortunately, no one has ever been hurt.

In 1992 at Fort Stewart, GA, a Tennessee NG Artillery unit landed a round near one of the housing areas. They had their azimuth (or whatever you call them) was way off. Fortunately there were no injuries.Every couple of years, a (different) vacation house near Camp Grayling in north central Michigan gets shredded by an errant artillery shell.

I suspect an electrical malfunction because that 20mm Vulcan cannon (6 barrel Gatlin gun) is electrically fired, and 25 rounds is a really short burst when your gun fires 100 rounds per SECOND. There will be a thorough investigation, for sure.
First question, did the pilot think he was on target?

Libdems, taking a page from Chechnayen rebels, have begun their assault.

As much of a screw up as this was, it's good to know they now fly with live ammo. A positive development since 9-11.

Pukin Dog, I really appreciate your posts and insight. I have a couple questions, if I may:
Wouldn't it make more sense to put a couple barges out in the ocean for gunnery practice?
Is it normal for fighters to carry live ammo during training or practice that doesn't involve shooting?
Given that the rounds were simple lead, is it possible or unlikely that this was a NY CAP?

This was obviously lead slug training ammunition. Live 20mm is an exploding round and there would have been much more damage?
