WTF?
What was the name of that NASA Space Shuttle that went down two years ago?
Not quite. EMP is pretty masty stull. I will post more tonight when I get home from the lab.
The SCC in NORAD track as many objects as possible, even to include a glove lost during an astronaut walk. I have been in the SCC and have friends that work there. The Satcat the publish is a pretty amazing doc that is updated regularly.
Any info on the necessary minimum size of these detonations?
masty stull = nasty stuff. Sigh. Posting in a real hurry.
I can answer this but it will have to be later this evening.
Not quite. EMP is pretty masty stull. I will post more tonight when I get home from the lab.I'm not going to get into nit-picking on a non-technical formum on this subject; EMP, as purported by some here is not the all-devastating, one-bomb-destroys-all US as purported by an earlier poster - address him if you like, as I have the same ability to research and read the same material you do ...
Thunderstorms are quite good generating EMPs. I have lost electronics to the EMPs as have some of my friends. You might try living in Tampa Bay (on the water, of course) or in the Jemez Mountains to really get a feel for having lots of lightening around.
Hmm... "Masty Stull"... sounds like some FReeper lore in the making...
ALL YOUR MASTY STULL BELONG TO US!
;)
Hah! Mine's not imaginary. (Phase does matter though.)
I just found the coolest page! Check it out!

The Command Carrier looks like a boom box, complete with handle. (Or maybe a carrying case for a flute.)
I never even heard of that thing (Or a lot of them).
They were neutralized in a suprise attack by combined forces from Remulac and the planet Zot. The Zandozan leader was killed when he was crushed by the Great Zot, dropped on him by Baldar himself while visiting Paris last year. Baldar later apologized, explaining that he had mistaken the Zandozan leader for John Kerry (Remulac is a very conservative planet!)

And since you have the same ability to research as I, I will let what we find answer the question, and allow resident experts in the field refute or support it with documentable fact.
All most of us can go by is what we read, and there seems to be far fewer sources that support the contention that "EMP has been overstated."
And since you have the same ability to research as IThe 'usual' crapola.
NO mention of specific effects on equipment.
I prefer something like the following as oppsed to 'press release class' material A/K/A "writing intended for non-technical consumers" such as you posted:
I am grateful for the opportunity to address the Committee on the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) threat environment and to discuss its impact on commercial off the shelf (COTS) equipment used in military command and control systems.www.house.gov/hasc/testimony/106thcongress/99-10-07jakubiak.htm...
Testing of COTS equipment has allowed us to make some observations regarding the vulnerability of COTS equipment to a range of EMP environments that may be of some use in assessing the impact of an EMP environment on the unprotected commercial infrastructure. In general, it is possible that some equipment upset can occur when the EMP environment field strengths are between 3 ? 8 kilovolts per meter (kV/m). When the field strengths reach above 8 kV/m the risk that some equipment will upset becomes more probable. In the range of 7 ? 20 kV/m there is a possibility that some equipment will be damaged, above 20 kV/m damage is probable. Results from some recent testing of COTS computer equipment in September 1998 reconfirmed these observations.
