Is It Time For The U.N. To Get Rid of Kofi Annan OR is it Time for the U.S. to Get Rid of the U.N.?

Please speak your mind here about whether you feel the image/usefulness of the United Nations can be salvaged after its umpteenth scandal - The Oil for Food Program scandal - by removing U.N. Leader Kofi Annan.

Or, does the United States need to kick the U.N. out of New York, resign its seat in the U.N., and stop supporting the U.N. financially?

I favor the latter solution. I feel that the U.S. would be better off by resigning its seat from the U.N. I believe that this would fairly quickly bring about the overall collapse of the U.N.

The latter solution.

The UN, like the US Democrat Party, has outlived it's usefulness.

If we get rid of the UN, don't we also get rid of Kofi?

The U.N. is a sticky tar baby. If we leave we lose our veto power, and the U.N. will pass a global tax on international travel and money transfers, cutting it's strings to U.S. deep pockets and control, and become self sustaining. We don't want that.

There must be a way to destroy it from within, by displaying it's utter corruption to the entire world.

Is this a trick question?

Anyway, the screws were tightened within hours of knowing
the election outcome:

I have a feeling that Bush will be considerably more
demanding and less patient with the Dictator's Club
this term.

We may not exit the UN in 2004, but I wouldn't be at
all surprised if we exit before 2008.

Get rid of the whole stinking mess. Throw their sorry a$$es out of this country.

Let them set up office in Africa or the middle-east, that's where the problems.

They have it soft and cushy in the U.S. Get them out of my country!!!!!!

Send in the bulldozers! If you want to be nice to those terror-supporters, we can send eviction notices first. I don't want to be nice to them, though.

Give the UN building that $1 billion face lift that has been demanded. Install hidden cameras and audio equipment everywhere. After a year, release all recordings and evict the tenant. Worth every penny.

I agree that Kofi Annan is a well-dressed buffoon and that there is widespread corruption & waste in the UN. I do believe there is a role for an international organization with universal membership in order to coordinate (NOT command or direct) collective activities. However, we will NEVER EVER be able to establish another international organization in which the USA has such an advantageous position--we are a permanent member of the Security Council with the ability to veto any UN action--we'll never get again. Best to keep that and just do our best to get some reforms.

It would help to reform our press first, but anyway ...

I'd expect that before exiting the UN, the US would
first begin forming the new Planetary Alliance.

The only purpose the UN ever served was as a barrier to the old USSR. That is all it was ever meant to be and nothing more. Today it has evolved to a bunch of high paid friends of dictators and tyrants. We need to get out of the UN, get the UN out of the USA, and give the money to the CIA to go after many of the same people that are there and support the terrorist regimes.
Freedom to all people.

Just getting rid of Kofi Annan won't solve the problem. The problems with the UN existed long before Kofi Annan became the leader of the organization. Reagan was extremely angry with the UN, and he was the one that initiated the withholding of UN dues to force changes. I believe Reagan also withdrew the US from UNESCO, which GWB unfortunately had the US rejoin. Thus, as you can see, the problems with the UN have existed for at least the past two decades.

The UN really does more harm than good. Since it was founded, there have been approximately 60 wars. The UN has acted in only two: (1) Korea and (2) the first Gulf War. Otherwise the UN has been a complete waste of money, an enemy of the US, and a sponsor of Islamic terrorism.

Get the US out out of the UN now, and the UN out of the US. Maybe some newly elected GOP senator will be ambitious enough to enter another such bill to finally solve the problems with the UN once and for all.

Unfortunately, if we kick the UN out, most of the restaurants along 1st, 2nd and 3rd Avenues in midtown Manhattan would close (no more shameless, useless ambassadors and staff dining on expense accounts). There'd be a lot of restaurant employees out of work, and we don't need to add them to the Democrats list of disaffected voters.
