Only one day after his victory speech, President Bush spoke of spending his "political capital." This was a phrase that no doubt was bandied about during the victory party the night before, but it wasn't suitable for prime time. It sounded like he was bragging. Where was the humble George Bush? Gone with his convincing victory? Let's hope not.
Cockiness can be dangerous. Don't forget Newt Gingrich's flub in late 1994. After the Republicans' stunning sweep of Congress in Nov. '94, Gingrich, heady with glee, blathered on about how women don't belong in the military because it's men who are built to go out and kill giraffes. However minor the venue in which these words were spoken, the media, eager for any glitch in Gingrich's armor, picked it up and ran with it. Although he kept his Contract with America in the first 100 days of the new congress, the only thing the media chose to play up was his complaint about not being allowed to sit with Clinton on Air Force One.
It is true that President Bush has earned political capital. It is also true that he has a small window of time in which to spend it. What he must also understand is that the media are unbelievably lazy. They report what people say, because that's the easiest thing to do. It involves no research, no fact checking, no analysis, no brain power. Just record, play back, trascribe, slap a couple of quotation marks on it, and send it off.
Along with my prayers that Bush would win this election, I included prayers that he would stay humble. Humility was forced upon him by the circumstances of the 2000 election. This mandate in 2004 could make him forget that 48% of America does not like him, and that except for the courage of 250 Swift Boat Vets, that 48% might have been 51%.
So speak not at all, Republicans, and use that big stick.
Oh don't be such a control freak.
Message to the Democrats: Just Shut-up!
Sorry, when you're ahead it's time to push along further. If the liberals are so unhappy about it, maybe they could try to use the MSM, Hollywood, musicians, celebrities and a handful of psychotic billionairs during the next election... oh, wait [/sarcasm off]
May our votes and our voices continue to be heard...LOUD AND CLEAR!!!
Speaking of Swift Boat Vets I had a Navy Officer in full dress uniform stand in front of the polls all day where I was Election Judge with a sign on his car saying Swift Boat Vet for Bush. we had 598 of 730 votes for Bush that day. I never was able to talk to him as he was gone before I closed down the polls at 7:00pm.
Oh please. Shut up.
You are correct. In my state of snit over the original article, I misunderstood your post and misunderestimated you (thought you were a Dhimmicrat).
They raise them for a little while, then the prisons raise them the rest of the way.
The one (well, one of many) thing that I just love about GW is that he just doesn't let the noise of detractors, pundits, critics or MSM turn him from what he wants to do. He just shrugs them off, keeps his eye on the goal and keeps going forward, doing what he can for the American people. They may as well be little gnats buzzing around for all the good it does them.
Gingrich's comments about women in combat were correct and did not torpedo shite in 94.
Clinton turned around the shutting the government down on them and the MSM piled on as usual.
The Clinton appropriated much of Contract with America (lite) as his own after he stuck his finger in the political winds.
A democrat.....EEEEEEUUUUWWWWW!!!! Anyway, I thank God that I'm not and yes, I forgive you!!!!
We should assume the mantle of authority and rule as Republicans. The public gave Bush the mandate and all in the hell he should do is offer the democrats to get aboard his train or stay where they are. He should not graavle and be timid. The choice is theirs as to whether to participate or not, but we, the conservatives, have prevailed. We win. They loose. We have been 40 years in the wilderness and now have the opportunity to influence the country for the 1/2 century with strong, conservative supreme court justices and strong conservative legislation.
Ah screw humility. Full speed ahead. Until we can remove the overwhelming, corrupt, liberal influence on our nations media and politics, I say let's not let up for a second.
