Save Roe: Elect Specter
by Timothy P. Carney Posted Oct 19, 2004 The liberal Philadelphia Inquirer has endorsed Sen. Arlen Specter on the grounds that a vote for Specter is a vote to save Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that overturned all state bans on abortion.
In its endorsement of Specter, the Inquirer writes:
Preserving the legality of abortion plays no small part in this decision. Sometime in the next four years, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee will very likely find himself in the pivotal role of scrutinizing at least one new Supreme Court nominee. Assuming that Republicans are in charge of the Senate, it would be better to have the chairman's seat filled by Specter, who says Roe v. Wade is "inviolate" as the law of the land. If Specter loses, next in line among Republicans to be chairman is Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, who opposes abortion rights.
This editorial comes less than two weeks after Specter pledged to use his chairmanship to confirm "centrist judges."
In 1986, Specter was chiefly responsible for sinking the nomination of Judge Robert Bork, whom he said had too narrow a view of the Constitution. After Bork's defeat, President Ronald Reagan appointed Anthony Kennedy, who cast the deciding vote in upholding Roe in the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
Specter won his primary against conservative challenger Pat Toomey by just over 1000 votes when President Bush and Sen. Rick Santorum hit the state in a flurry of events in the final days of the campaign. |

Considering the fact that the majority of the 30 to 40 million potential voters killed since Roe v. Wade would likely have been Democrat, the only thing that could prevent them from continuing their slide into obscurity at this point would be the reversal of that decision.

Unless of course he is 'democrating' them. Perhaps he is speaking in 'nuanced' phrases?

MESSAGE FROM LAURA INGRAHAM:
STOP SPECTER NOW--WE NEED YOU: Liberal Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter, who bailed on the Supreme Court nomination of Robert Bork in 1987, and who ardently describes himself as pro-abortion rights, is slated to become the new chairman of the Judiciary Committee unless you act now. We need you to call your Republican senator and make your views on this heard asap. Contact Senate Judicary Committee members by clicking here and click here for the numbers of your all Republican senator(s). If your state is represented only by Democrats, call Majority Leader Sen. Bill Frist's office at 202 224 3344.

From post: "In 1986, Specter was chiefly responsible for sinking the nomination of Judge Robert Bork "
Believe Judge Bork was on Fox today - could have been another expert - but the message was clear - The Roe issue should never have been decided by the S.C. Nothing in the constitution - should be a state issue -
No wonder Specter didn't want him on the court -

"save roe"
such an interesting irony. isn't roe the woman in roe vs wade that is a staunch christian and anti-abortion activist? they are more interested in the ruling, then the woman.

For a RINO, Specter has been pretty loyal to the party. Bush and Santorum gave him the benefit of the doubt -- now it is up to Specter to prove his loyalty.
And he's failing at it...

"The Roe issue should never have been decided by the S.C. Nothing in the constitution - should be a state issue -" I never understood how they justified the decision. Never understood how they justified the prohibition amendment either. If Roe was to save lives, why wasn't the Second Amendment incorporated across the board? The Supreme Court won't even hear it.

What would "Roe" herself have to say on the subject? You recall that she became a pro-lifer at one point. I assume she remains so.

Sounds like Bush and Santorum are dangerous too. I'm getting a little worried about President Bush. Did you hear what Bush said the day after the elections? He said he was talking to all the liberals then he said he wants their support and I quote... "I will work to earn it"
A lot of real conservatives at FR warned us that Bush would go soft after the elections, but I never expected him to announce just hours after he won that he was going to betray us.
If it was up to Specter Pro-Life Judges like Clarence Thomas wouldn't even be on the SCOTUS. Yesterday on Fox Karl Rove said "Senator Specter is a man of his word." Now I know how Bush is going to "earn" the votes of liberals...by betraying the unborn!
You can see it in his beady little eyes.
