192 with Gnome might act a bit sluggish, take a look at fvwm (the link I provided has RPM packages for Fedora), I personally prefer FVWM 1.24, to FVWM2 but its because the config file is much easier, in FVWM2 you dont really need the config file..
I'm running KDE, which might explain some of the slowness. Thanks for the link, I just downloaded it and grabbed a theme rpm as well.
Is the transition fairly easy to do?

Im assuming youre using the bibmem kernel right? The other things to look at are obviously swap space, and disk arrangement. A hardware raid, or at the very least a software raid 1+0 (Stripe of Mirrors) and some good speed disk (the smaller the disk (and the higher the number) the better.
but 13K blocks a week is less than 2K a day, thats only about two a minute you should be able to handle that with far less than 9 gigs. You could be bound by something other than memory. If I may ask what product are you using to do the filtering?

Depends I am sure there is a 'gnome-ish' theme out there but I find the closer a theme is to something else the harder it is to use. FVWM is very easy to use, its just a bit harder to initially configure..

The default in Fedora is YUM, I dont have 3 running yet (its on torrent right now) but after a bit of pissing and moaning after not having RHN yum has grown on me.

The program that does the email filtering is custom made, and very well done. Our finding show that for some reason part of X is running even when the GUI is off and we can't stop it. It causes the system to lag after about 10 days.

Are the X processes being spawned by init?

Hmmmm. Halo 2 was shipped tonight.
The timing is suspect.

I'm gonna try it. My issue with FC2 was the kernel. The Promise RAID controller support in the 2.6 series was broken until (I heard) 2.6.8.1. Since FC3 uses 2.6.9, it should work.
(fingers crossed)
