It's not new, but it's becoming popular with a new generation of kids. And this time the kids are younger. Some are in their early teens and even preteens. It's called "wet", or "fry." So why are kids dipping marijuana in embalming fluid, then smoking it? "Wet" or "fry" is extremely dangerous. Sometimes kids I spoke with about this practice add PCP to the embalming fluid. And experts say that's leading to very aggressive and unpredictable behavior in kids as young as 11. The stories you hear about "fry" are unbelievable.
"That's when I flipped the couch over and hurt a lot of my friends," said Mark.
"The gun went off in her hand. She didn't know what she was doing," said Teresa.
"It made me feel really stupid, like I wasn't all there," said Jennifer.
They've been smoking embalming fluid.
Kids are paying up to $200 for the fluid. Then they dip their marijuana or even a regular cigarette in it and smoke it. And sometimes they add PCP to the marijuana stick -- a dangerous combination.
Mark said, "I hit a pole. Like I said, going 70 and my friend got a concussion and had to get 37 staples in his head and I just walked off and left him there."
UT public health researcher Dr. Ronald Peters has heard it all.
"Extreme bizarre violent behavior with agitation and high anxiety," he said.
And he says a "wet" stick, which tends to be used by younger kids, can kill brain cells in a single hit.
"You may have a 13 or 14-year-old that could be literally out of their mind with one hit of this particular drug," said Dr. Peters. "They could have long term neurological damage."
Anatasia was in 8th grade when she first smoked "wet."
"It took me an hour to walk home three blocks," she said. "And I had put myself in a dangerous situation."
How did they get embalming fluid? From dealers, but there are other ways.
"They'll hit up a funeral home, kick the door in, run in there and get it and run out," said Mike.
And the consequences of this high could be lifelong.
"I was 11 when I first did it," said Reuben. "It slowed me down a lot. Now I can't really do my math work and stuff like I used to."
Most are at the Riverside General Hospital rehab program as a condition of probation. They get intensive counseling in hopes of saving them from their deadly future. And these former "fry" users warn parents.
"To talk to their kids about what's going on in the drug world because it's getting bad. It's getting really bad," said Teresa.
Dr. Peters says "wet" is not only dangerous to users, but to others. Users having hallucinations caused car accidents, carried out drive-by shootings, and attacked police officers. And Dr. Peters says some teens get addicted to "wet" the first time they use it.
How Future Democrats are made.
Nothing new. Used to be called "dust". Entire neigborhoods in NYC, primarily white areas of Queens, have been on this since the 70's.
Libertarians.
Yeah, when I was a kid my friends called it ice. I saw a math genius get reduced to a fat, stupid stoner in a few months. In 9th grade he had Cornell trying to lure him early, now he does manual labor at a grocery store.
When I was a kid, chewing gum in school was the NO-NO thing to do..!
It's enough to make me not want kids. What the hell will they grow up with?
Silly me.
Gosh, can we do it again???
Embalming fluid? That's just pure nasty.
Must be "wet & fry" at DU.
At least they'll be well-preserved stoners...
Honestly, kids will do the supidest things-and then they turn into stupid adults.
I remember some kids using this where I grew up about 22 years ago. An aquantince of mine got beat up really badly by a friend of his who was using it. Pretty disturbing that people will does this to their bodies and minds. You parents need to pay attention and keep a close eye on your children. Don't think it couldn't happen to your kid.
It would probably be best if these kids got out of the "drug world" and joined the rest of us in the "real world".
If they make it that far.
Reports that the response was a shrug and "Ehhh..." when George Soros was informed of this trend could not be confirmed at press time.
If only these parents had watched "Six Feet Under," they would have known about this danger! ;)
