Rhode Island doesn't deserve two Senators. Apparently there are so few people there that they can't even find two people who are adept at answering questions.
He is in the Senate & we are going to get him out soon.
Would you rather have it 55-44-1 or 54-45-1 ?
He represents one less vote we have to pick up for cloture.
Sure I would like him replaced with a "good" Republican, but Santa didn't bring that choice. I'll take him as is, but he will always be suspect.
The moderates already have supported the President on "conservative" judges. Repeatedly. Did you pay any attention to the cloture votes of the last two years?
Calling Chaffee a RINO is an insult to RINOs
And did we get to 60??? Read my whole post. Their support was absolutly inconsequential. talk to me when they put a judge over the top.
You're right I'm sorry..lol
We will get to 60 if we keep our caucus intact. We will not get the crossover votes if we don't start with 55. Chafee, Specter et al are part of that equation.
Does anyone know what Lincoln Almond is doing these days (2 term Rep. Gov. of Rhode Island)? Maybe he might be interested in the senate?
I think it is entirely possible that Frist and the Republicans have been holding fire on the option of taking the issue of cloture for "advise and consent" hearings on judicial nominees to the Supreme Court. The framers certainly did not intend for it to take 60 votes to confirm justices when they very deliberately included the "advise and consent" language in the US Constitution.
Clearly, the slippery slope that the Democrats have brought the nation to over the past 15 years can only lead to a permanently transitional Supreme Court of "recess-appointed" justices, with ever-changing faces year after year, President after President. That is NOT what the framers intended.
If Frist and the Republicans do not address the issue NOW, you can bet that the Democrats will address the issue down the road when they have a Senate majority and a Democrat President. And the Republicans will be left whining and gnashing their teeth because once again the Democrats will have beaten them to the punch with a new "dirty trick".
Chafee is acting like a child.
True, but neither the White House nor the Senate leadership has the cajones or the appetite to go for the "nuclear" option. Won't happen.
He may be dumb but not that dumb. What could he have gained by jumping to the minority?
Absolutely, and if we don't change the cloture rule so they don't have to vote for pro-life judges when it matters... They'll be voted out by their pro-choice constituents.
Chaffee and Snowe in the next election. Goodbye majority.
I thought I read here that Mark Levin and his organization were working the issue through the process on their own.
(holdonnow - - please see post #69.)
If Chaffee left, he would be the second most conservative Democrat, after Ben Nelson of Nebraska.
Something to think about.
Even "Puff" Daschle could have worked that one out.
But this is the good line: "I'll work hard to regain trust." (Translation: OK, I screwed up. I'll vote your way a few times now so you don't kick me off my fave committees!)
Jeffords is very lonely down in his office in a stall of the mens room.
This Rino doesn't want to join Jeffords.
Even though he was the spitting image of a Rockefeller Republican, he was at the very least, a thoughtful, deliberative, decent and honest human being.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same of his despicable heir.
Lincoln is a scheming, incompetent boob, and frankly, I'm ashamed that this man is a member of the same party as me.
We can only hope that conservatives living in RI have more spine and integrity than some members of The Club For Growth.
He's put himself in a hole if he wants to be re-elected.
The Dems can shoot at him now as an ineffective incumbent in a Blue State. (despite an increase in Bush vote there)They have no reason to embrace him as a defector when one of their own has a good shot at him when he comes up for re-election.
And the Republicans are unlikely to embrace him fully again.
I predict he'll lose the next election and a Dem will win.
