I was doing THEIR take on it, their attempted spin. This whole past 10 days has shown we CAN control one of our own senators. And his name is Specter.

Still spinning?

You've been pro-Specter from the beginning.

I've never been "pro-Specter." I am a Pennsylvanian and have worked against him--and would gladly do it again. However, I read the landscape as it was, not as some of us would like it to be. Toomey is not our senator. Oh, that's right, he never made it out of the primary. I offered my view of how it could work, what the downside was of hardlining the situation, and suggested how it may play out. I've already got two out of three, and if it turns out I was wrong on the third, I'll be the first to admit it. And if I'm right, I know you're big enough to admit you were wrong.

As long as we're laying it on the line, let me re-explicate what I said the goal was: That Specter would not block any of the president's nominees, on any basis, and that he would get them to the floor so they get an up or down vote. If these last two weeks have whipped him into good enough shape that those two things happen, then he has been re-formed by conservatives--as re-formed as anyone like Specter could ever be. The only smart thing Clinton ever said was, Politics is the art of the possible. I believe we will see the judges we want.

I suspected you were right, too.

But I didn't want to give any energy toward that by saying so.

It seems to me that the puppet masters have our Senate firmly in their fiercly demanding grip.

And, that we have thorough going wimps and traitors aplenty for our Senators.

imho.

I have no trouble at all crediting you with advance perceptiveness.

That remains to be seen. All I know is that Kennedy can call highly qualified judicial nominees, "neanderthals", and not be called on it. President Bush can nominate a demonstrably highly qualified black woman to an important position and have that woman debased with nary a heavy breath from those who would call us extremists. We are at a point that it is a given that we will be called extremists. We have the political power. Use it. In a democratic process when a decision has been achieved with a 51 to 49% split, the 49% must be disappointed. That is the character of the process. Those 49% should willingly accept the decision. If they do not do so and the majority does not follow through with the decision voted upon, there does not exist, by practice, a democratic process. We have shown great reluctance to implement the democratic process. We seem to be more focused on the "beauty contest" process.

You say smart things, and I do not disagree with how you lay out the dynamics of their actions. They can be, and often are, despicable.

But you know what they say about government and sausage-making...sometimes it's best not to see the process of how they're made. I never said keeping Specter was an ideal or even elegant solution. I said we could get to where we needed to be, if he were whipped into shape. And it seems he's been whipped.

Good weekend.
