Raid in The Hague Leaves Three Police Officers Wounded; Air Space Over City Closed
Tampa Bay Online and AP News ^ | November 10, 2004 | AP Staff

"THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - An explosion during a police raid on a house in The Hague early Wednesday wounded three police officers, while Dutch authorities closed the air space over the city as part of the operation.

Authorities would not confirm whether the raid was connected to an investigation into possible terrorist suspects, and it was not immediately clear why air space over the city - which has no major airports - had been closed.

Several city blocks were cordoned off in a mostly immigrant neighborhood near The Hague's Holland Spoor train station, and police demanded identification from anyone wishing to leave.

The explosion occurred as police raided the house during an operation they said was conducted on behalf of national prosecutors. Gunshots were also heard during the raid.

Two police officers were hospitalized in serious, but not life-threatenidg condition, and one was treated and released with minor injuries, police spokesman Frans van Rijnswou said.

The building was surrounded by police in riot gear, fire engines, ambulances and swat teams.

Photographers on the scene showed images of a man of Asian descent being dragged from the building clad only in boxer shorts and escorted away, but police would not confirm the apparent arrest. They did confirm there were still suspects in the building..." (End excerpt)

In Europe, does "Asian descent" sometimes mean "SW Asia"?

(*&~#$ the politically correct for effectively taking "Oriental" out of the lexicon.

Air space over The Hague, Nederlands closed down since the raid. Yet there is no airport in The Hague.

The Dutch have experienced over a dozen arson fires since the arrest of the murderers of Theo Van Gogh, the film producer. It will be educational to watch the Nederlands respond to terrorism on their turf.

You got to laugh at these Europeans. They never stop attacking Israel for defending itself against literally thousands of murders or decades by these terrorists. Yet, one little Van Gogh gets stabbed and they go ballistic, burning down schools, etc.

Wonder what they'd do if they had a bus bombing everyday? You think they'd show 'restraint' and stop the 'cycle of violence'?

Hypocrites!

Good point. It could have been just about any country now described as Asia. It's sometimes difficult to orient oneself to the new geography.

It is uncertain whether it has been the Dutch doing the burning. Here's more from the article:

"Van Gogh had received death threats after the release of his most recent film that was critical of the treatment of women under Islam.

Six suspects, believed to be members of a terrorist group, remain in custody, including the alleged killer, 26-year-old Mohammed Bouyeri, who holds dual Dutch and Moroccan nationality.

There have been more than a dozen arson attacks in the Netherlands against churches and mosques since Van Gogh's killing in Amsterdam more than a week ago."

Here's an updated version. They now mention that the explosion was caused by a hand grenade.

There is no reason listed for air space being shut down, but it sure is interesting to watch the Dutch respond to terrorism. I wonder if the USA will ever develop a hair trigger response such as this.

Nov 10, 2004

Three Police Officers Injured by Hand Grenade in Terrorism-Related Raid; Air Space Closed Over City

The Associated Press

"THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - Suspects holed up in a house under police assault Wednesday threw a hand grenade, injuring three officers conducting the terrorism-related raid.

Hague public prosecutor Han Moraal said the raid was part of a "continuing investigation into terrorism," but would not confirm it was related to the Nov. 2 killing of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by an alleged terrorist.

Suspects were still inside the building, Hague Police Chief Gerard Bouwman said at a press conference. Authorities also closed air space to small planes over the city.

Several city blocks were cordoned off in the mostly immigrant neighborhood near The Hague's Holland Spoor train station, and police demanded identification from anyone trying to leave the area.

The explosion occurred as police raided the house during an operation they said was conducted on behalf of national prosecutors. Gunshots were heard.

Your point about Israel is well made.

We should note however that the dutch aren't apparently queuing up to make friends with Muslims, or volunteering to be human shields for Mosques.

Herein lies one of the problems with the EU. Where is the outrage from the rest of the EU? Why aren't France and Germany condemning these attacks? Where is the unity, or does it only happen when France and Germany say so?

Is that true for Europe? In the USA, the term "Asian" includes Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Koreans, etc.

The Philippines have had their own problems with radical Muslim. In the article, there is also mention of a Moroccan being arrested.

Why aren't France and Germany condemning these attacks?

Because they don't want to set off their own Muslim populations.

We need to accept the fact that Islam is inimical to freedom. "A great religion has been hi-jacked" is a bunch of nonsense.

You know after time, they will blame the U.S. After all had we only sent one missle after 9-11 they could have continued to pretend there were only some 'isolated' incidents of terrorism and they didn't have to really do anything.

Yes, France only cracks down on Muslims when it involves school dress codes.

Germany may still feel a bit smug over their response to terrorism during the Munich Olympics.

Currently Germany has big problems with immigrants, unemployment and cost of living.

Germany may be so self focused right now that the Nederlands' problems are going unnoticed.

Very sad reflection and unfortunately, you are probably hitting the nail on the head.

Also I dread the implication that we may be called on to help, only to later bear further insults and accusations for doing so.

Hope you meant to say that the Dutch Police raid on the Hague is "...just the beginning of the end of the Islam plague."
