Missing: A 120-pound radar device that fell from the sky Monday off a California National Guard helicopter somewhere between Mather Field in Sacramento and just west of Gustine in Merced County.
"We don't know when or where it actually fell off," said National Guard Lt. Col. Doug Hart.
The gear had not been recovered as of late Tuesday.
California National Guard officials, meanwhile, are asking for the public's help in recovering the device, called a FLIR, for Forward Looking Infrared Radar.
It fell from an HH60L Blackhawk helicopter, which is used in search and rescue missions, during a training flight Monday. The helicopter flew in a straight line south from Mather Field to the Newman-Gustine area and back, Hart said.
Officials said the device does not pose a hazard. They said it is standard equipment that also is used by law enforcement and fire agency helicopters.
Finding the radar device about the size of a basketball and solid black, with a protruding camera lens could offer clues as to why it fell off, Hart said.
It wasn't until after the helicopter landed that crew.......
wonder if you could be kind to add a "N" in the title to make it Northern?
Well we should help the NG but on the other hand this can be used to clock speeds? HMMM
Did they pay their mechanics this week?
Loved it when we were assigned to Mather.
LOL....
was listening to KFBK news and they stated this is the same device used on LE helicopters.....
;o)
Some windshield washer guy swiped it when they stopped for a red light.
You may also want to get a space inserted into "itsradar". And, you might find that the Report Abuse link works better/faster than posting to Admin Moderator, too.
It isn't a radar.
FLIR stands for Forward-looking Infra-red. It is a night vision device.
FLIRs aren't cheap. They start at about $250K and go up from there (rapidly). They are also have delicate electronics and optics. My guess is that this thing is smashed. But laying blame will be important. That's the real reason they need to find it.
Yep someone has to get the Statement of Charges.
Let me take a SWAG at it. A lowly maintenance tech forgot to tighten the mounting bolts?
Loose bolts?
ping
thank you....
LOL.... that is the way I copied and paste from the online article.. The bee forgot to separate them... I thought afterwards, hummm, doesn't look right!
I like it!!!!
