Oakland Police Chief Richard Word said Tuesday that a prostitution sting on Monday netted 85 suspects. Word said the sting shows that "younger and younger girls are being exploited" by Oakland pimps.
In a daytime sting operation in West Oakland and the city's Fruitvale District, police arrested 30 prostitutes, 50 johns and five pimps.
Among those arrested on suspicion of prostitution were seven juveniles, including a girl who was only 12 years old.
"Having pimps locked up is the key, because you're saving lives when you do that," Word said.
Word said pimps exploit young girls by forcing them to use drugs and beating them.
He said pimps recruit young girls by hanging out at places such as bus stops, taking them on dates, treating them well, giving them gifts, telling them that they can make a lot of money and telling them they love them.
Once young girls are sucked in by the pimps, the pimps then turn the tables and tell the girls that they owe them and must turn tricks, Word said.
The chief said, "We'll be doing sting operations as often as we can afford to," stating that Oakland has "numerous pimps."
Although pimps are the primary focus of the sting operations, Word said the johns who seek out prostitutes also bear some responsibility for the problem.
"The client base feeds pimps who in turn exploit the girls," he said.
Word said he would like to have the names and license plate numbers of johns published in local newspapers, but he said the city is barred from doing that at this point.
Is it against the law to publish this or just the city? Why couldn't a church, anti-prostitution or other civic minded group do this?

The ACLU loves, honors and protects child-molestors, child-torturers and child-killers everywhere. They have a special fondness for them.
good lord...12 years old...that is the most awful thing i heard today...12..jesus help us all...
The age of consent is non-existent in Mexico --- we have to accept cultures that are different from ours --- multiculturalism teaches us that all cultures are superior to the American one.
Any 'man' who would sleep with, or pimp-out, a 12 year old girl should be executed - and I'm not even a big anti-prostitution man, as long as everone involved is an adult.
Leave the kids alone. Period.
Even in the Roman Empire, people were disgusted by the depravity.
The Left cannot understand that the immorality and depravity of the Democrat Party and its minions was important to its resounding defeat.
They would have us equate "morality" with "sexual prudishness". They hope to gain a propaganda advantage from doing so, but the absurdity of their position is obvious to most honest people, and most people are honest. Following their line of thinking one would equate an aversion to juvenile prostitution to "sexual prudishness".
Democrats have lost their moral compass. They no longer understand the meaning of morality.
The defense of forgery, purjury, and rape are merely an example.
They did not understand that the objection to Clinton's behavior were not outraged "sexual prudishness" but outrage at blatant immorality--including for example the defense, by the "Mainstream Newsmedia" et al., of purjury and an attempt by a powerful man to fix a court case.
The American people were also disgusted by the immorality of the "Mainstream Newsmedia" and its so-called "journalists" during the recent presidential campaign and before, when they defended such indefensables as forgery, abandoned all commitment to truth for its own sake, and allowed themselves to be reduced to the level of mendacious and hate-filled Leftist propaganda.
These are the moral values that lead to the recent Democrat defeat.
Americans are disgusted with the moral depravity of the Left and the Democrat Party--and they do not mean sexual prudishness.
