LONDON - An aircraft carrying Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth II (news - web sites)'s only daughter, was involved in a near miss with a British fighter plane being tested over northern England on Thursday.
The Eurofighter Typhoon combat jet - with a top speed of 1,321 mph - was on an exercise from a Royal Air Force base when it came within 3.3 miles of the princess' Royal Squadron BAE125 plane over Morecambe Bay, northwest England. The fighter, not in service yet, is being tested by RAF pilots.
The royal flight pilot was told to take "avoiding action" after air traffic controllers realized the warplane had turned across its path.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that Princess Anne, 54, had been involved in an "air proximity incident" Monday morning as both planes headed for Scotland and that she was informed about it.
The defense ministry said it was the first near miss involving one of the $55 million warplanes and that an investigation was being launched by the Civil Aviation Authority.
Princess Anne landed in Scotland and attended her two scheduled public events there Thursday.
The National Air Traffic Services said an air traffic controller in Manchester saw the Typhoon turn to cross in front of the royal flight and told the pilot of the royal plane to take avoiding action. Both planes were flying at about 28,000 feet.
One of the aircraft was 600 feet above the other, and they were 3.3 miles apart when the fighter crossed in front of the royal aircraft above Morecambe Bay, officials said.
It was the second near miss involving the royal family this year.
In March, a Royal Squadron jet carrying Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, was involved in one with a civilian airliner while he was traveling to Spain to attend a memorial service for 191 people killed in terrorist attacks on trains in Madrid.
OOps.
Fighter pilot with career cut short.
Its hard to believe that 3.3 miles apart could be considered a "near-miss". However, with combined closure speeds, it very well could be.

Yes, that Rambo's resume won't look so good in future.

He's probably currently getting his ears burned off with some rather interesting words and term usage.

If you shant control your navigational meandering, I am prepared to be coarse with you through discipline and nasty words. And I bloody well mean it!
LOL!!
The epitome of high-observable.
drones for the Raptor ;-)
As George Carlin has pointed out: This was not a "near miss." This was a COMPLETE miss.
A COLLISION is a near miss. "Wow, look at that wreck! And they nearly missed each other!"
Kind of like the announcement saying " in the event of a water landing ..."
hubba hubba ... now those are pretty planes!
Another member of the royal family died less than two weeks ago--Princess Alice. Of course that was to be expected since she was in her 102nd year.
Wasn't Prince Charles involved in a near-miss flight not long ago?
Pretty? Naaaah, they look like something Saab came up with 40 years ago.
Now this is pretty.
