Its hard to believe that 3.3 miles apart could be considered a "near-miss". However, with combined closure speeds, it very well could be.

If the two aircraft made contact, that is a near-miss.
If they didn't, that is a near-hit.

As George Carlin has pointed out: This was not a "near miss." This was a COMPLETE miss.

A COLLISION is a near miss. "Wow, look at that wreck! And they nearly missed each other!"

Another member of the royal family died less than two weeks ago--Princess Alice. Of course that was to be expected since she was in her 102nd year.
