President Bush on Monday tapped the chairman of his re-election campaign, Ken Mehlman, to head the Republican Party.
Mehlman, a protege of chief White House strategist Karl Rove, is Bush's pick to replace party chairman Ed Gillespie who is returning to the private sector. The Republican National Committee formally selects the party chair early next year, and Bush's recommendation holds enormous sway.
"Ken has served the Republican Party and the president with honor and distinction," said White House press secretary Scott McClellan.
While Rove is considered the driving force behind Bush's political strategy, Mehlman is widely credited as the organizing genius who turn White House orders into action. From the campaign's headquarters in Arlington, Va., he oversaw an Amway-like political organization that recruited tens of thousands of volunteers, assigned them political tasks and held them accountable.
In the end, the Bush campaign's get-out-the-vote operation defeated the conglomerate of Democratic special interest groups working on behalf of Sen. John Kerry.
McClellan said Mehlman had "a clear vision for making our gains long lasting" and had "boundless energy."

The AP is just amazing. What a bunch of hacks.
The AP is almost a thing of beauty. I find them indispensible as a benchmark for the lunatic left.
What does that make Rueters? 8-o
Amway?? Comparing the GOP to f-king Amway? What a bunch of Clymers!
A Jew as RNC Chairman...are the Boca Raton Holocaust escapees still terrified of Evangelicals now?
Oh no, that's just objective reporting you know.
party chairman Ed Gillespie who is returning to the private sector.
Thanks Ed for a job well done! You deserve our respect for beating the pants off that old sourpuss MacAwful.
OMG this is fantastic news!!!! Ken Mehlman is a genius. Also his appointment is gonna make the DNC hacks choke. A Jew as RNC Chair!!!!
FYI: DUrs are saying Mehlman is a closet gay...
This is fantastic -- he did a great job running the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign and was hoping he would move over to RNC -- he is a fantastic choice.
Just trying to catch teh wave of homophobia i guess...lol.
Whatever Mehlman is, if he is for our side and politically brilliant, by all means should he be the chair.
I never tire of seeing Larry "Bud" Melman!
Kenneth B. Mehlman Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Political Affairs
In January of 2001, Ken Mehlman was appointed deputy assistant to the President and director of White House political affairs. In this role, Mr. Mehlman oversees all aspects of the President Bushs political agenda by working with members of Congress, federal agencies, state parties, and community groups.
During the general election, Mr. Mehlman served as national field director for Bush/Cheney 2000. In this role he was responsible for working with the campaigns leadership in all 50 states to build strong grassroots teams and execute winning political plans. Mr. Mehlman directed the campaigns operation, and worked closely with the Republican National Committee and state parties to develop and implement Victory and voter contact programs.
Mr. Mehlman served as Midwest regional political director during the primaries. As part of the 10 states for which he was responsible, he managed the Iowa team and wrote and implemented the plan that produced Governor Bushs historic Iowa caucus victory (the highest percentage of votes for a Republican in the history of the caucus). The Iowa grassroots model was subsequently used in primaries in South Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Virginia, Maryland, and other states.
From 1996-1999, Mr. Mehlman was Rep. Kay Grangers (TX-12) chief of staff and he oversaw the political, legislative, and communications operations. Previously, Ken was Rep. Lamar Smiths (TX-21) legislative director from 1994-1996.
In addition to running Grangers campaign, Mr. Mehlman worked on William Welds successful 1990 campaign for governor of Massachusetts, Ohio Sen. Mike DeWines 1994 campaign, and House races in Virginia, Texas, and Georgia. He worked on Sen. Bob Doles 1996 campaign, the 1996 Republican National Convention and President George H. W. Bushs 1992 re-election campaign.
Mr. Mehlman practiced environmental law for three years in Washington, D.C. and is a member of the D.C. and Maryland bars. He is a 1991 graduate of Harvard Law School and 1988 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College.
Mehlman will be a great boon to the party. The ranks of under-40s who worked tirelessly during this campaign means there is tremendous strength in the GOP "going forward" as financial commentators like to say about a company's prospects.
Mehlman will capitalize on this "bench strength" even more, while the Dems are fading and have no [effective] new blood.
Also I love the way he talks back to the Russerts, Schieffers, etc of Old Media.
