We don't condone it, but the ritual "mooning" of the Amtrak train in Laguna Niguel is an annual tradition and a fact of life in Orange County. There's no official organizer and no individual claims responsibility, but, like the inexplicable leaping lemmings or the 17-year swarm of cicadas, thousands of pants-dropping loyalists bare their bottoms every year on the second Saturday in July as the Amtrak train speeds by. What on earth started this meeting of the behinds? According to the Orange County Register, in 1979 a man challenged his drinking buddies at the Mugs Away Saloon with a beer for anyone who ran outside to "moon" the train. Well they did, and the tradition stuck.
Amtrak trains run from around 7AM to 11:30PM between the viewing spots of Irvine and San Juan Capistrano stations, though the busiest times are from 10AM-4PM. Mooning takes place on the east side of the tracks, and most trains do slow down to accommodate onlookers. If you don't like crowds or are a little shy, try "night mooning," which starts at 8PM. Though police generally turn the other cheek for this public display of assets, they will be in attendance to keep the peace, so the rule of thumb is: behave, don't bring any alcoholic beverages or otherwise illegal substances, and be respectful so the tradition can continue. -- Leah J. Stupid is as stupid does.
Moonolo's, once prolific on the west coast, were almost driven to extinction after the white man built the railroad.
UNNGH...
That causes the train to get behind in its schedule.
Hmmmm that is close by...I may have to check this out.
Your tagline virus done got me ;-P
