A tunnel used by Palestinian weapons smugglers along the Egyptian border collapsed today, burying several people inside.
Israeli military sources said the tunnel collapsed while an unknown number of Palestinians were digging toward an Israeli army outpost near Rafah. Officials said the army would help in rescue efforts.
Palestinian officials said the tunnel collapsed as a result of heavy rains in the area overnight. They said five people, all from the same family, were trapped in the rubble.
They said the army had permitted two Palestinian bulldozers to enter the area to help dig out the people.
The Rafah area, along Gaza’s border with Egypt, is a frequent flashpoint of violence. Israeli troops operate in the area, searching for smuggling tunnels used by Palestinian militants.
When the rescue operation is complete, they should then take the bulldozers and knock down that family's house.
Mother Nature takes sides.

I don't know why they would bother digging them out, only to dig more holes to put them back in. Just leave them there and put a sign up saying HAHAHAHA! Digging them up with a backhoe with those 12 inch spikes might be a bit messy.

That reminds me of hunting armadillos years ago. Pour gas into their tunnels and light it up. We accidentally hit a skunk tunnel with the mama and 5 or 6 smaller skunks. Blew them out like they were shot out of a cannon. Caught all the dry grass on fire. Not funny at the time.
I helped a friend rig up a motorcycle carb mounted onto the front of a leaf blower for such applications. Quite effective. A couple of times a little too effective......
They need some 15 lb shaped charges to help free those victims!

(IsraelNN.com) Reports from southern Gaza indicate that three persons involved in the construction of a weapons tunnel that collapsed in southern Gaza this afternoon have been found alive and are being questioned by security authorities. No additional information is available at this time.
