Radio host spews venom to juice ratings
The Boston Herald ^ | 11/21/04 | Beverly Beckham

Posted on 11/21/2004 5:42:57 AM PST by raccoonradio

He's not called John ``Sly'' Sylvester for nothing. He is, as the saying goes, sly like a fox. He knows what he's doing. He's one more white guy with a big mouth who happens to have a radio talk show and who knows exactly how to play the game.

The game is fame. And never mind how you get there. On his Madison, Wis., blab fest Wednesday, Sly called national security adviser and President Bush's choice for secretary of state Condoleezza Rice ``Aunt Jemima.'' The reference is pure racism. ``Whites gave us this image,'' says Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, author of ``Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben and Rastus.'' ``They made her very dark, they made her very obese, and they put her in the kitchen.''

Condoleezza Rice is so far out of the kitchen that it's Sly who should be cooking pancakes for her. This hateful and intentionally denigrating comment should get him booted off the air. But it won't. It'll get him just what he wants - exposure and ratings.

More people who know his name. I'm playing into his hands. I'm writing about him.

Sylvester is both the program director and morning shock jock on WTDY-AM. He's rude, loud and opinionated, the holy trinity of today's breed of talk show - not hosts - hosts implies civility. Sylvester and his ilk are hostile.

Two years ago, another WTDY-AM employee, Chris Krok, used the term ``bitch slap'' on air to describe what he thought should be done to a certain female state representative. ``Bitch slap'' was, until then, a regular part of the station's vernacular. But on this day it was directed at a public figure and some important people got riled. Predictably, the station's advertisers got a little nervous, so Sylvester, dripping with contempt, (he didn't apologize) ordered all of his broadcasters to refrain from using the words ``bitch'' and ``bitch slap'' in their daily discourse. And then he wrote to the offended state rep: ``We certainly will find better words for a female politician who uses her political power to deny citizens their voting rights.''

Only the threatened loss of advertisers made him back up, but only a little and not for long.

``Aunt Jemima,'' Sylvester's latest attention getter, trumps ``bitch slap'' for a put-down. But Sylvester has no plans for apologizing this time, either. ``I will apologize to Aunt Jemima,'' he announced one day and 100 phone calls of protest after this latest slur.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called Sylvester's remarks (Oh, did I mention, Sly like a fox also called Secretary of State Colin Powell an ``Uncle Tom''?) ``racially insensitive.'' It's a tepid response. How about unacceptable? How about insulting? How about canning Sylvester and letting him spew his venom away from a microphone?

Just what does a black person have to do in this country to get respect? Condoleezza Rice graduated from college when she was 19. She earned a doctorate by the age of 26. She's a concert-level pianist. She speaks four languages. And she has the ear of the president of the United States.

And what does Sly do? He puts people down. He calls people names. It's his profession. This is what he gets paid for. And now he's in the news, which is exactly where he wants to be.

Ah, the tolerant liberals . . . they hate anyone who doesn't fall into line with their own beliefs!

Somehow I can't imagine Slyvester saying it to her face. I'll bet if she married someone like Mike Tyson he'd spit out apologies like an auction caller.

I mentioned this on a radio-interest mailing list I'm on and mentioned that the MSM isn't giving this too much play because it's a liberal host dissing a conservative black
woman. One response I got was, "But they spent a lot of time on Air America talking about it."

I replied, "I meant the networks like CNN and the over-the-air TV networks, etc. Not a radio network which has only slightly more affiliates (39) than Baskin-Robbins has
flavors". How many people listen to Air Frankenfraud anyway?

Correctamundo. People respond very predictably.

No different than the Jackson "Costume Malfunction", or Carolyn Parrish defecating on the carpet to gain attention.

No class, it's all about THEM, etc.

Yeah, I think we should point out to the black community who the real racists are.

I happen to work in an inner city ministry. The blind loyalty to Dems is part of the reason for poverty.

The sheer hypocrisy of the loons of the left is amazing.
Simultaneously in our state, a conservative talk show host, Mark Belling, is being skewered for for using a common term for illegal aliens. His comment was made out of righteous anger. In multiple occurances, people who are not citizens of our country, who came here through deception in the dark of the night, voted in our national election. This is WRONG!
Condeleza Rice got educated, she learned multiple languages, she overcame the barriers of the segregation of the deep south to rise to a position of power in the administration. For this she is vilified. How is it that this "Sly" person is not being run out of Madison on a rail, with tar & feathers?

When are people going the realize that the competition for listening ears is so intense you've gotta resort to name calling. Even Limbaugh does with Calypso Louie and Tom "Puff" Daschle among other notable names.

I've read Ms. Beckham's column in my local paper for many years, she is no conservative. But she writes what she believes (mostly liberal) and so her thoughts are all the more interesting re: Dr. Rice. I can almost detect a bit of shame on her part.

``Whites gave us this image,'' says Marilyn Kern-Foxworth, author of ``Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben and Rastus.'' ``They made her very dark, they made her very obese, and they put her in the kitchen.''

Explain, then, Esther Rolle, Isobel Sanford, and Butterfly McQueen. Created by white people?

LOL, yes I was questioning that remark too. Obviously he called Rice "Aunt Jemima" to insult her, but I have never found the image of Aunt Jemima herself to be racist. I mean, I've seen fat, dark, women cooking in kitchens. And she was designed to sell food. Is Mrs. Butterworth racist? And how about that coffee lady, Mrs. Olson? We don't really have her here in the northeast, but Johnny Carson used to talk about her often. Is that an insult to Scandanavian - Americans, implying they are all hyped up on coffee? As is my hubby, a proud Scandanavian-american btw.

I guess a lot of this stuff IS in the eye of the beholder. But, no matter, the silence of the left is deafening. And it is their silent assent in all manner of evil that in the end will destroy them. I hope they are aware of that, somewhere in their little besmirched souls.

Aunt Jemima was put on a package of pancakes because it was an image that people could trust. If this pancake batter was good for Aunt Jemima it would be good for me. If the concept of a Aunt Jemima was meant to be offensive, it would sure be the strangest way to sell pancakes.

People did not care if Aunt Jemima was black, they wanted a good pancake mix.

Those who create a negative view of Aunt Jemima are the ones with the problem.

If Rice is called Aunt Jemima so what? Aunt Jemima was used to deliver a good product.

Even Limbaugh does with Calypso Louie and Tom "Puff" Daschle among other notable names.

Calling someone "Calypso Louie" or "Puff" Daschle is a bit less offensive than this "Sly" slug effectively calling Dr. Rice a "sell out" and "house nigger". You see, only a liberal white guy would be able to do that and not get tossed from the air. If Rush had said something similar about Ron Brown, you can bet he'd be doing the midnight-to-six shift at an elevator music station in Kanab, Utah!

This "Sly" slug indeed HAD called Gen. Powell an "Uncle Tom," but still went merrily ahead with spewing venom about any black Americans who ran away from the lib plantation.

As long as Jesse, Al, Harry and Puffy keep bowing and scraping to the DhimmiRAT massuhs, things are just fine. But let a black man or woman express a conservative (or even middle-of-the-road) point of view, and the libs go berserk.

Star Parker, Mychal Massie, Larry Elder, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Condoleezza Rice and Jesse Lee Peterson are conservatives, yes, but they approach their conservatism differently than white conservatives do. Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakhan and Combs all preach the same socialist drivel that the other DUmbasses preach. It's because conservatism has a strong intellectual basis and a variety of thought that it is a vital and strengthening force in our society, and black conservatives bring varied approaches to the basic conservative belief: The individual is more intelligent than the state.

Libs are frightened to death of that notion. If blacks and Latinos don't need the state to do things for them, if they realize that racism is the line of thinking of a few morons and not of society in general, and if they realize that with talent and education they can achieve all they want to achieve, then what reason would they have to vote for the DhimmiRATs? None. And THAT is why the libs are reacting to Dr. Rice like a bunch of drunk Klansmen at a sheet sale. Her very existence says "We don't need you," to the libs....and we can't have that now, can we?

Look at who the racists in this country are. The people who want to perpetuate stereotypes about uneducated, illiterate, violent, poor blacks aren't President Bush, Vice President Cheney or the Republican leadership. It's people like the NAACP, MTV, BET, the (c)rap "music" industry, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the Congressional Black Caucus. If you look for party affiliation, you'll find a "D" after all those names. And if you look at Lester Maddox, Bull Connor, Orval Faubus and George Wallace, you'd also find a "D" after those names. You do the math.

The racists in this country are Democrats. They're a bit more subtle now, and they use leftist talk radio to do their dirty work, but these people are still as foul as their sheet-wearing predecessors.

And they need to be exposed for what they are. Let's get to work and do it.
