Arizona Sen. John McCain said Sunday that while he has no current plans to make a run for the White House in 2008, he would not rule it out.
"I do not foreclose the option," he told NBC's "Meet the Press."
"There will be plenty of time to consider whether to run for president again," the Arizona Republican said. "But certainly I don't think it's in any way appropriate for me to speculate on that at this time." McCain, who will by 72 in four years, said he didn't expect his age to be a major obstacle to a prospective presidential run.
"I have a wonderful mother who is 92," he told NBC. "Maybe I could use her as an example."
A recent Gallup poll of possible GOP presidential candidates shows McCain tied for the lead with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, with each garnering ten percent support.
In a head-to-head match-up with expected Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, McCain would win 53 to 37 percent, according to a Fox News Dynamics Poll.
The media-friendly Republican said he'd decide whether to make the run by 2006.
He won't rule it out, but conservatives will.
Pray for W and Our Troops
I will never, even if he's running against Hillary, vote for John McCain. It's not that he opposes some elements of the Party or the President, it's the manner in which he does it.
Only thing that srtands between McCain and the Republican Party's nomination for President: the fact that most Republicans don't like him.
Hillary would beat him because conservatives would let him sink. I could not vote for him.
Why? So they can make room for pro-abortion and pro gay rights Rudy? I think that given the choice between Rudy or McCain conservatives will hold their nose and vote for McCain. I don't see any clear winners on the horizon...if McCain wants it he may be our strongest contender.
He also seems to have some psychological problems left over from his imprisonment at the hands of the communists the leftist he loves love and his torture.
In addition, he is scientifically ignorant. He thinks global warming is caused by man's activities, when there is NO data to support such a claim. He had a hearing on it which was populated by scientists trying to feed out of the public trough. We should suspend payments for all such silly research. The Earth has been warming and cooling over millenia. Antartica used to be a tropical paradise.
The problem is that Guiliani is far more liberal than McCain.
In any event, it seems that the public is fairly wise in generally electing those with successful executive experience (Governors) than those without (Senators).
I will NOT vote for John McStain for President.
Hillary would beat him because conservatives would let him sink. I could not vote for him.
No Worries, McCain has to win the Republican Nomination and since he holds the bulk of the Republican base in contempt, there is no chance of that.
No vote from me, Johnny Boy, you RINO!
Agreed.
I disagree. You and I may not like him but there's a very large contingent of Republicans that do. I know several good GOPers who still proudly sport McCain 2000 bumber stickers.
If McCain seriously wants to run for the job you can bet that he'll get busy mending fences in the party...in 2-3 years people will forget all about how he stood in Bush's way time and time again in the first term.
Its his to loose. However, He has to return to his CONSERVATIVE roots now. The time for him to make that change is running out....
That would be his loss and Ours...
Guiliani's election would put Washington back into gridlock, but without having a 'RAT in charge of the executive. Things could be worse.
Don't worry folks, I still believe it is too early for 2008.
Also, the best REPUBLICAN candidate is Tom Tancredo.
I hope TANCREDO will be a candidate and will for sure kick all the RINO behinds in the REPUBLICAN primary.
Remember, Tom Tancredo 2008 = Last Hope to Save America
No. He can't beat Hillary BECAUSE he is a RINO. To win a national election you have to get your base over-the-top-excited. McCain doesn't do that.
A McCain vs. Hillary election will be the flip side of Bush Kerry. Except that this time it will be our side who will be driven only by hate of the other candidate. Meanwhile they leftists will be deliriously in love with her.
McCain is a formula for disaster
